My 1987 Peavey Dyna Bass I just got from GC Used two weeks ago. This bass sounds AWESOME. Plays like a Peavey - The Best. By the way, just for fun I took off the original truss rod cover and made a new one from a blank. I just took a torch lighter and heated it up and bent it to match the old one. Then drilled a hole in it. Next time I change the strings, I'm gonna put the oval inlay decals on the neck !
It would appear so. Ronnie told me he designed the preamp so that they could fit the battery in the cavity, but then someone decided to do a separate battery compartment on some of them. Interestingly, of my "dyna preamp" basses, the bolt on Dynas have the battery in the cavity, while the Dyna Unities, and first gen TL-5s have separate battery compartments. I don't have a Sarzo, but it also used the Dyna preamp.

Yes, and if you're not careful it slides underneath the preamp so it takes a few times to try and get it out. The battery was stone cold dead, which is why I bet GC Used listed it as in Fair Condition. They probably thought it was broken.

Wow, I didn't know MECH was a Peavey employee. That explains a lot. I knew had had a ton of unique Peavey's, but I didn't know he designed preamps, etc.
Also, I knew the Sarzo and Dyna shared the same preamp but I never had one in the Sarzo I liked. It was always "hissy". Maybe that was the pre-VFL's ? This Dyna I just got is dead silent. I love its characteristics in the active mode. I honestly don't ever see using the passive mode, but I like the fact that it exists.
The Sarzo pickups are said to be slightly tweaked versions of T40 pickups.
