The initial plan for the pickup, even before picking it up, was to put a 916 super ferrite P pickup in it because what better suited platform is there for one? But looking at what other pickups can be had for around the same price point, I'm now really leaning towards a DiMarzio Relentless Middle. From the few short recordings on the 916 site, their super ferrite P seems to sound good and I like the 80's super ferrite pickups I've had before, but I know the DiMarzio sounds good. There's a slim chance I may be able to get an original 80's Peavey super ferrite pickup in a couple of days for dirt cheap. If so, I'm toying with the idea of routing the body for that mounted in a slight reverse-P style slant.

I know the sound one aims for is purely dependent on one's own taste, so maybe I'm just processing out loud here, but that's where I am as far as a pickup goes for this thing. The EMG GZR is also on the radar.

Aside from that, unless I find a template and cut one, it seems the only option for a black pickguard would be going through Pickguardheaven.

Anyways, here's the start of what might be my new #1 once it's complete.

My previous Peaveys had the triangle trees. I'll be shifting this bar string tree over a bit because I'm not a fan of the A string resting on the screw. The current bridge is just a mashup of parts from the parts bin until the mail man gets here later with the new one.

I have the same "1962 Corvette Blue" Fury, that now wears black tuners and a black bridge.
It came with the regular chrome hardware, but over time I swapped them with hardware from a Patriot bass.
Mine obviously has an all maple neck so it's not quite as cool as yours. I love the rosewood and painted headstock on yours.
The EMG Geezer P that's in it now sounds very good, the original pickup was dead when I got the bass.
Changed the original speed knobs to black as you can see, I still have the original knobs though.
The original W/B/W pickguard is on it currently but also (as you can see) I have a B/W/B guard for it too.

You did a really good just with that bass! It makes me more excited to finish mine.
I usually prefer maple fretboards purely for aesthetic reasons, but the rosewood and black headstock combination has always been one of my favorite pairings with Peavey basses.
You've got me reconsidering the pickguard now because the white guard with black hardware does look really good

If you do decide to go non black, make sure that you get Parchment and not White.
The white guard is the original one so it has aged enough to make it nice and creamy, not yellowed but not stark white.
Let me know if you want the original Peavey speed knobs and I will send them to you.

Thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it! I actually have a pair of Peavey speed knobs in the parts bin, so I'm all set there. Someone else may need them more

I'm in discussion with the seller of this bass. A 5 string super ferrite Foundation.
At first glance, I thought I had stumbled across a unicorn - a KOA Foundation.
I've now found out it's a refin and probably maple or poplar - but it sure looks interesting.

I'm asking the wood experts to give me their opinion on the kind of wood.
I can get it at a decent price. Would you buy it???? Refin is not the greatest.

Does look like Alder. It also looks like a "sticky" re fin, you know, where the finish never dries. If you end up with it I would recommend stripping and finishing with Tung oil or similar. Lots of sanding/coats but worth the effort. I attached a picture a my kit bass with Okume wood and Tung oil finish for reference.

I'd go with a maple, Silver if I was pressed for an answer.

Would I buy it ?

I say that's unlikely. I wasn't too impressed by Peavey's thinking (money) with putting a 4 string pickup in a 5 string bass. Gave them the benefit of the doubt, Axcelerator 5, 1st version Foundation 5, Dyna-Bass 5 and the 1st gen TL-5, only got myself to blame 😀

Do you get the chance to play it first ? I'm thinking the way I play will probably be different from you and my playing had a bearing on my feelings towards 4 string pickups in 5 string basses.

I remember you saying in the past that the SF isn't really adequate for 5 strings. I have not had a chance to play it yet. I need to drive a couple hours if I want to try it/buy it.

They say the truss rod and electronics are sound. Looking again at the picture, I'm wondering if that is not an original bridge with the saddle grooves in it. I don't recall a Peavey bent plate bridge with those grooves....but could be wrong.

Given the distance and uncertainties, I think I'm leaning away from it. I could probably pick it up for just over $200 but still.

Bridge gave me pause but I'm afraid I can't remember what was on mine. They were just "off the shelf" pieces.

Mismatched/missing screws at the pickups are worth pointing out. That big height adjustment screw, neck pickup, suggests the threaded plastic below either wore out or snapped. Similar story at the control cavity. It's a passive bass, why would anyone have the cover off enough times to strip the screw holes ?

BTW

@UNICORN BASS was bang on the money regarding the body material. Manual from Aug 1992 has these sporting alder bodies 👍

That's a good catch on the mismatched pup screws and another warning sign.
The cover would have come off for the refin and probably filled screw holes with gunk in that process.
May have been why the pup height screws snapped as well when re-installed.

Definitely an interesting bass but think I'll pass on this one. If it was 5 min away, would be worth a look but.

There's no reason to touch the height screws when removing a Ferrite, they're not connected to anything.
You just slacken the 4 corner screws and the whole unit drops out.

Redundant info if you're passing on it :)

No, that's maple. A beautiful specimen. I love the old Peavey rosewood fretboards.
Its a really cool bass. Don't like the pink ones. Not a fan of pink. Don't even like pink clothes on the ladies.
