I bought a sheet of aluminum at the nearest metal shop and went at it first with a jigsaw and drill, then with nibblers, then with files and finally with various grits of sandpaper. I tried to do a brushed look but some of the scratches were too deep for my patience. Pretty rough looking but I still have the old guard if I get tired of how ugly it is. Still undecided what kind of knobs to put on. I like the knurled metals ones on my Strat, might go for some of those.

That looks fantastic. Now, time to make a copper one, and let it get some of that nice green oxidation going. It would set off that red nicely. ;)

Back at the end of last month I found a Peavey Forum AX 4 string at my local B&M store, see post #31,023. I wanted it badly of course but needed another 4 string FSO like a hole in the head. I let it stew until this past weekend in the hope someone would buy it. Of course that someone was me. A lovely bass, almost in new condition, a little chip and a very small bit of finish gone from the back. Did a quick and dirty set up, love the ABM bridge, will have to re string because whomever did it last time cut the strings too short to get my prefered 12 deg angle at the headstock.
It is amazing how I bought a MIA bass of this quality and with an original case for the price of a new Squier! I may become like a certain Scotsman we all know and start collecting more Peaveys. This one will compliment my white T40. Oh and thanks to Dr Cheese for stirring my interest in the AX with his many videos on his AX fiver!:cool::cool::cool:

Oh crap! Excitement got the best of me! The case candy included a case key, allen wrenches and a 1996 manual for the wrong bass!

And to help record stuff -- what's the difference between a Forum like this and an Axcelerator?

NOTE: There were multiple types of Forum - some were not this nice. The "A" in "AX" designates Active (has a preamp).

Well, costwise, below $500. The AX was revised from the first edition with a slightly wider nut, 2 band EQ, balance, volume, non switchable 18v power for the VFL pups. Note how close the bridge pup is to the bridge. I haven't played an Axcelerator in ages so can't really comment on that. This bass to me feels and sounds like a souped up Jazz and p bass rolled into one. The tone controls have a LOT of real estate either side of flat. Likewise the pan control goes from dark to light in a super progressive manner. Of course the neck is typical Peavey, feels just right. Yes, I am smitten. They made the AX as a precursor to the later Cirrus is what i understand.

If memory serves correctly, you have/had a GV (or was it a millenium) ... any comparisons for the archive?

I really like that the instrument looks classic/classy.... and how did I miss taping a pick... I want an education loan refund.

Yep. The GV is my main player simply because it's about 38lbs lighter than the Forum. :)

The GV neck profile is very similar, but the quartersawn rock maple on the Forum has a nicer feel than the carbon wrap.

I unloaded the Milli because the neck is wider to accommodate 19mm spacing, which is a bit too much for me on a 5-string.

Also, the Forum AX pickups have a really nice slope on the edge which is the perfect distance to use as a thumb rest. I added a thumb rest to my GV because the GV pickups (which appear to be identical to the ones on my Cirrus) are too wide.

Your old GV is Awesome!

Well i was playing the Forum last night. Spin Doctors Turn it upside down was on the menu, the AX copped the perfect Warwick like tone when flat was selected on my Roland cube 120XL combo. Next up was my favourite, Blow by Blow by Jeff Beck. Panned slightly to the neck pup and hit the super low amp model, bam! What a bass!

Thanks, yes the I think they called the color onyx black?

Bypassing the Conklins, Modulus, Emerald, Stingray, and anything with the f word, this is the one that the producers prefer.

At the time, I knew folks at the plant who assembled it from visual first. Something about it has the extra 10% that the other fleet milleniums do not have.

When my house caught in fire, bypassed all of the botiques and collectables.

It is insane how almost identical other sound and feel... One of my coaches suggested a standardization for muscle memory.

Sometime this summer, I'm going to do a video of spending $100 Max for gear.. just to prove that the talkbass bias is addicted to depleting retirement funds.
