That sure would work! I would think doing that kind of routing work on the back of a T-40 would lighten it up quite a bit and shouldn't take away from the sustain, as long as you left the center block solid. It would work like a chambered body, but without the cover.
The trick would be routing it so that the balance wasn't thrown off. You could totally use a brush on clear coat in the chambered part.
