Okay, someone help me out with this one. It's got passive electronics and black hardware. Looks like it might be Koa; I think there was another one with dark-tinted maple if memory serves. I can't find any information about one with black hardware, though. I'm driving out tomorrow to make an offer on it. The more info I have the better.

I'm not sure that's koa. The color of the wood looks a too dark, although that could be the lighting. The other odd thing is the light colored wood in the headstock. I don't think I've seen a koa Unity that looked like that. Usually the headstock is tinted the same dark color.

That particular Unity, being the passive model, is a bit less desirable than the model with the Schaller bridge/pickups and the full electronics package. It's still a nice bass, though. It's been on the GC site for quite a while. That bass is scheduled for a price drop, so the store will be willing to deal.

Here's a couple of pics of my Koa/Purpleheart Dyna Unity - passive electronics, neckthrough, gold hardware...great bass. Very light, and fun to play.
The first 2 pics were taken in sunlight, and the 3rd one indoors in very poor lighting.

The headstock on my Koa TL-5 is a lot lighter than the body. Just depends on the piece of wood.

I've got a 1994 P/J Forum - one of my favorites to play mainly because of the awesome neck. Nver had the chance to play a single pickup model - good luck

I was looking more along the lines of the strip of maple (?) that is in the headstock of this particular bass. Do you see how it looks - in this photo, anyway - as though it could be a maple strip coming up through the neck with walnut wings? I haven't seen a Unity model with a headstock like that.

Very nice basses, very well made, 18v electronics. These can be had for $200 (or less) in good condition.

Not sure they make a single pickup forum. The Fury would be the single pickup version. I believe.

They made 3 versions of the Forum: the passive p/j pickup model, single active soapbar, and double active soapbar. Kind of confusing, considering that the p/j model is an entirely different bass.

Here's the deal. I traded a Millineum BXP plus $89 for this
'84 Patriot about 2 weeks ago. First I always said I would not own a red bass, sorry just not a favorite color of mine. But the real problem is that I just can't get into the tone of this bass. I guess I am a P bass type person, even with my foundation I only use the neck pickup. My problem is that I belive that it is alright to "upgrade" a bass such as putting better tuners, bridge or pickups in but, I don't like seeing a bass having new routing done to move or add a extra pickup that was not original. I guess I am not into the "Frankenbass" stuff. So, am I just crazy for this type of thinking?

I own 6 different Peavey US basses. The Patriot probably has the most unique tone if any of them. I personally love the throaty growl of the Patriot. But, I would say its not for everyone and its not the most diverse in tone controls. If I were in an all original atmosphere, I would definitely make it work. If I'm in a cover band... Probably not my main bass. Just my opinion though.

Thanks. I thought about moving the pickup but I don't want to butcher it. I think I'll just hang onto it just to have another MIA Peavey and try to find a Fury later on and since I am not in a band or gigging yet the Patriot might be good for when I do start playing out

I picked up a '93 Fury last week - it's a decent enough bass, but definitely not the equal of my MIA Fenders, or even my MIM Deluxe P Bass Special, for that matter... I will say that it has a very nice neck, and the fretwork is quite good, though - and it's easily worth more than I paid for it... Maybe I'll snap a pic tomorrow and post it, for the "no pic, no bass" rule...

Man, that's strange! Never even seen a pic of one like that. That would have to have three pieces of wood for the neck through.

As you can see from this pic, the neck on my Dyna is 5 piece construction (Koa/Purpleheart/Koa/Purpleheart/Koa) and 4 more pieces making up the body and wings:

The middle piece in the neck does seem to have some wierd colorations to it, but according to the owner's manual it's solid Koa neckthrough construction with Purpleheart strips.

I wondered about that, but if you look at the body, the light color goes straight through to the end of the bass.

You could upgrade that Patriot. It's a very inexpensive bass, and there are many out there. Problem is, you'd be sinking a lot of money into modding a bass that will be worth $50 when you're done with it. So if you don't like the result, and you very well may not, you will have to give it away. If you don't like the tone, sell it and try something else.
