As above $200 or less (with the hard case). I had one of the 2 pickup versions in the past. It was an excellent bass. The nut width was like a modern P bass (about 1 5/8"). The pickup(s) are very wide and massive and pickup more harmonics than a typical soapbar style pickup. Same pickup is used in some of the Rudy Sarzo basses and the G Bass. The single pickup Forum should be similar to a G Bass with a wood neck.

Just because the neck is bowed doesn't mean that bow can't be adjusted out. But for <$100, that bass is worth it for the parts alone. You can't lose if it's in good shape.

Actually I was thinking the same thing. The bass needs a lot of TLC, but I can do the clean up and adjustments myself. The Schaller bridge alone is worth the price. I am going to offer $50.00 and see if I can snag it.

You know how you look on eBay and occasionally you "watch" an auction then forget about it. I just got a notice that she bought it. :smug:

Now I'm wondering if she paid too much?

I still love her dearly and would never say anything if she did. I'll just say that was a good deal. But the bass does look nice. :)

Love the finish. I don't think she paid too much if it's as nice as the seller says. I've heard others say these basses can be had for much less but I think those days are long gone.

$500 is about right. Templar is right, the days when you could by a $300 TL-5 are gone. That is a lot of bass for $500. Congrats.


Believe it or not, that finish is transparent black. The flash and/or lighting gives it a purple tint. So, when you open the case, don't be surprised that it doesn't look like that.

Here's the silver/black textured B Ninety kit I received a little while back. Swapped out the hardware for chrome and put in a set of Seymour Duncan SB-3s after I tried the original PUs. Originals sound good but I like the SB-3s better. Strung BEAD. Played it at a gig and a jam and it plays/sounds like it ought to.

Got to play some country at the jam and it does the P thing with style, grace and authority. SJB-3 at the bridge adds some nice bark for R&R.

The paint job is growing on me and had good comments at the gig/jam on the sound and cosmetics from the players.

Love your wife even more, if that's possible. With a proper set-up, that TL-5 should be a real winner.

Can someone please educate me a little about TL-5's? I've seen a couple configurations and I'm not clear on whether or not they're all active basses.
The config I saw a pic of, for a sale fairly locally, was bad, and it looked like there were 4 knobs... so I was wondering if this is a VTVT passive configuration. But Bassguppy's one his wife got him (excellent wife BTW!) looks like the same position of the controls, but looks like there's a stacked knob... so active? And finally I've seen one with 5 knobs and a mini switch, which I'm guessing is active.

Also how does a TL5's neck stack up to a Cirrus 5's? That's the only US Peavey neck I've owned... vs just plinking around on in GC for a little bit.

EDITED TO ADD: Searching Google, it looks like the four knob placement model has VFLs and the 5 knob placement plus switch one has Super Ferrites? Is that right?

All the TL-5s left the factory with passive pickups and a preamp. The first gen had Super Ferrites and a 5 knob preamp. Second gen had VFLs and the stacked knob pre. Can't really speak to the neck comparison but I find the TL necks to be very comfortable. I currently have three that were made several years apart and there is a small profile difference between them. Probably due to the final hand sanding.

Here's a pic of my recently aquired Fury:

I stickered it up a bit because the body is a little beat up - I'll probably paint it and get a black PG for it sometime this year... I also have a set of EMG pups I'm going to try in it - I think they'll work out pretty well... I have to say it has a great neck - very good fretwork... Including tax and shipping, I have a total of $106 into it - that's alot of bass for the money!!!

Nice score. You may find the EMGs to be different but not necessarily better. The factory PUs in the Fury are pretty darn good but it is an easy swap to try. I tried a Seymour Duncan SPB-3 in mine and the difference wasn't worth the swap. The SPB-3 was a tad scooped and I had to add mids to get back to where it needed to be.

All TL-5's are active. On the first generation models, there's a switch that flips from active to passive. Without actually measuring them, I'd say the TL-5 neck is slightly thicker from top to bottom, but narrower from side to side than the Cirrus neck. Your Google search is correct
