Please, do your self a favor. The next time you see a Unity series Dyna...preferably the koa model...buy it-regardless of cost. They are one of the most amazing basses that I have ever laid my hands on. I have a charcoal Dyna 4 with Super Ferrites and a Dyna Koa Unity 4 with a Schaller P/J setup. Hell, the Super Ferrites are some of the best pickups I have ever played. That said, the Schallers are very nice in a P/J way. The fit and finish on the Unity series is unreal. The back is sculpted like the early Spectors-very, very comfortable. The ebony board is a real treat. As is the passive/active option. I bought my Dyna Koa Unity off the 'bay. It was somewhat beat (obviously played with emotion by the prior owner). I hit it with 0000 steel wool and oiled her down...so...pretty! Yup, it's got dings...so does my bought-new-Cirrus. The Dyna Unity Koa just about brings 'tears of joy' to me every single time I play it.
While I dearly love my Cirrus basses, I have to look back to why I chose Peavey over Fender as my prime bass company. Bang for the buck is readily cited. For me, it was the consistency of the instrument...the ability to 'feel' what I was playing, amplified or not...in my gut (literally-the resonance was that good). The T40, Foundation, Dyna and finally, Cirrus-they felt right, sounded righteous and...kept me in the 'fold'.

Thank you. Kim. You put into words the way I feel towards my Peaveys. You really can feel what you are playing with one, especially that Dyna for me. My Dyna4 is a gorgeous black on black that I got off the Bay a few short weeks ago. I was suppose to be saving up for that Foundation 5 but there was something about the Dyna that kept calling to me. I got it (and well went ahead and got the fiver too .. Im a mess LOL) and yea its dinged and has pick marks on it fairly fierce. The top ferrite actually has a smooth spot on it where the ex owners finger hit it so much. This baby has been played with a lot of emotion as well. I had to sit with some black fingernail polish and paint over the wood on a few of the dings. But I don't care. That bass is just incredible. It feels and plays like its brand new and its the first axe I have ever had that has active EQ. So cool!! At some point soonish, Knifemaker is going to show me how to take it apart and set the neck tilt and such. ^_^ I can't wait.

I am sorry to say that there was a Dyna Unity up on the bay a few weeks back and I passed on it!! I am really trying to get a matching black dyna 5 string to go with my 4 and I found one. I am also looking at a solid pewter Dyna5 right now too. So pretty. ^_^ If one deal falls through there is always the other one.

Reading your comments also put it into perspective my issues with that Brownsville Bat I have that Ive gone on about. I loved that thing -- had to have it. Its a great axe and it got me back into playing. But for all its cool looks and stuff, it wasn't enough to keep me into it. When I got the Foundation4 thats what did it. The problem with the bat is there is no 'feel' to it. And cool looking or not -- if you can't feel it, perhaps its time to sell it. ;)

First of all let me say that I really do everything I can to take care of my basses. But I can be a clutz and sometimes I have the darndest things happen (that is why certain parts of the Bat are taped, cause of my clutzy self). Sometimes its almost like the better care I try to give them the more things go wrong. I had an incident with my Foundation 4 a couple months back and I commented about it on the general talk board here and most replied like I was some freak and they never have accidents with their basses....well things happen and theres no way I can be the only person who has had 'oh crap' ... 'oops' and 'oh man that left a mark' -- theres just no way, man. But I do everything I can to NOT have freak stuff happen.

Now that being said, last night was one of those times when fate was just not on my side for keeping my babies from harms way. It was an interesting night last night regarding my Peavey brood...and Ive got bruises to show for it...

I have a small bedroom...only one of my peaveys has a case but its out right now as Ive been playing it. Right now (until I get wall hangers) all of my axes are stacked against the wall, nice and neat and very carefully. I have a small practice amp for playing inside... I had pulled it out and the last one I had been playing was my precious Dyna... it was the front one in the group all leaned against the wall. The basses are not one on top of the other but do slightly overlap though the Dyna was wholly in the front this time by some freak chance. Well, I went to sleep of course forgetting to put the amp back... I have birds and one started making some odd noise that woke me up out of a sound sleep. Half asleep I get out of the bed to check on my bird whose cage is on the other side of the basses and amp..in the dark I walked straight into the amp.......

When I hit the amp, it went over, I went over, to the side, and straight...INTO the basses...OMG!!!!!!! The Dyna took the worst hit, slammed into the fiver which went into the Bat...the Foundation 4 went the other direction and into my Lawsuit Les Paul. I fell almost into the bird cage and I'm trying to stop the basses from destroying each other, and stop myself from falling ... @_@ All in the dark, and half sleep.

None of the basses went over thank god...the bird was ok.. I made it back into bed...got up this morning.. I must have nailed the Dyna HARD cause the inside of my right arm is black and blue, and I don't bruise easy at all. My leg where I hit the amp is a sight as well. I inspected all the basses. The Dyna got two little nicks on the back of the headstock where it hit the machine heads on the Foundation5...nothing else on it or the other ones. They are all perfect as if it never happened save from some out of tune strings....thank god Peaveys ARE TOUGH. Thankfully the Ibanez practice amp that for its smaller size weighs a TON didn't hit any of the axes...

I never figured out why my bird made that weird sound, maybe she had a nightmare LOL but wow, I don't ever want to go through all that again. My Peaveys beat the crap out of me. LOL But I think had it been a T40 I crashed into Id be in the hospital LOL j/k

And I know, some of you are going to call me a freak, right? I love my axes and am very responsible with them but man, sometimes crap happens... and as I said, I know Im not the only one whos had freak stuff happen...no way. ^_^ Though 'wall hangers' has definitely moved to the top of the list on stuff I need to get ASAP!!!!!

Hey I can relate to being a klutz- and I have the dings to prove it!

Honestly, there seem to be a percentage of "bass owners" here on TB who have some very slick, expensive instruments which never receive a ding- or look like they receive any wear at all for that matter! Now I don't wish to over-generalize, but I know the element does exist. And the whole idea of giving someone grief for incurring light damage to their axe is kind of a snob move I think. Especially if you play in a rough-and-tumble setting, or live in a less-than-showroom apartment. Step off your compadre and their klutz isues!

For my own part, I have a logistical nightmare to deal with for keeping my musical scene together and out of the wrath of home remodeling, a constantly shifting pile of work-related sharp objects and trips to the laundry room.

My Schecter landed flat on it's back on a concrete sidewalk at an outdoor reggae gig last summer. Ouch... it's fine. I play it, it still looks good.

I have to go now, my wife and I are going to watch a movie about spies. I'm going to step carefully over my Chinese-made Burns Marquee as I get up from my seat at this computer-thing... :)

Very glad to know I am not the only one. And I agree, how in the world do some players not even inflict the tiniest damage to their basses? I believe its impossible if you play them. My biggest klutz move is with the headstock. If theres something to slam it into I will somehow do it >_< I think its just impossible to not ding your instrument if it sees use.

My place isn't exactly bass friendly right now either but after what happened last night I need to do something about protecting them better. At the very least next time, I turn on the light instead of thinking the night-light and me half asleep will suffice. I remember much banging and string twanging and wood hitting wood. :eek: wood hitting ME, me half on the floor with a bird looking at me like I'm nuts.

I think thats part of the reason why I doubt I will ever save up and fork out the big bucks for some super high end axe. Whats the point you know? No matter what I do it will see damage....besides I am very happy with the ones I can get and I keep some pocket change to boot :cool:

But I have to ask, how did the Schector end up on its back on the concrete? I think I'd still be beyond reproach on that one if that had happened to me. :p

Oh and as for what I did to the Foundation4 a month or so ago... for the most part, it involved me sitting there playing it, one of my other birds loose in the room, and a cup of coffee....:hiding:

Yay i get to join up!; found a 79 t-40 at a vintage guitar store in town for $275 with a hardcase. It is in beautiful shape. All the electronics are working and the neck is straight as an arrow. I brought it home tonight and put on some DR black beauties. It is hard to put down. sounds amazing.

I say this too, and have basses I like and enjoy playing I got for nearly a song- but someday I do want a Smith. Maple top, Ebony board, 32" scale. Old-style body. Someday it will be mine... oh yes...

I was setting up at an outside gig, at a private beach in Newport, RI. It was on a stand, and I was running power cables for PA, setting up my pieced-together rig, a recording jig, mics and cables, blah blah. There were kids and other wandering people passing close by, it was a tight space I was in and I was just sort of quietly hectic. I turned, bumped into it and didn't even register it until I heard a 'thwack'! and saw it laying there on the ground. I reproached myself plenty. The only damage was to one of the tuners on the headstock. It was almost as if someone and caught it and prevented real damage! Funny. Also no one else in the band saw it, which was really kind of convenient!

I'm a dad, and have seen my kid looking up at me from having just slipped and whacked her noggin on a tile floor. Anything less than that and really, I'm allright. ;)

You know, you can get gig bags for $20, made by that German company called "Stagg". They produce a lot of cheap, useable gear, and their gig bag will keep your bass totally protected in a short fall like you described. Their mic stands are good too, and cheap- a good notch better than the "On-Stage" brand (junk).

That "Patents Applied For" text only appears in the early models. And the REALLY early ones have the tracing around the headstock going all around the truss rod cover, rather than straight under it. According to Mr. Chip Todd, the people in charge of applying the decal had a tough time trying to getting it properly aligned and that's why the tracing was modified.
