The stock pickups in the Dyna Unity are Schallers, so they're decent quality. I had the same complaint you have, not with my Dyna Unity, but with a B-Ninety I picked up. I changed the J pickup to a Bartolini, and was very pleased with the result.

Same thing with a B-Ninety I picked up cheap. Love the way it feels and plays but the PUs were weak. Putting in the Seymour Duncans that I had was an big improvement but still not what it should be. After just talking about the DiMarzios I ordered a set for it. Barts are a little outside my budget.

This is an interesting topic - I have a passive Koa Dyna Unity (P/J) that is gorgeous, however, the stock pickups sound...anemic. I might start looking into a set of DiMarzio's or Barts for it.
Usually, I think I can EQ any bass into sounding decent, but this one is tough.
It is the only bass I own that sounds thin - even when the P is solo'd.

I'll keep an eye on this thread to get some more clues about a replacement set.

Stu, thanks for posting that link. The Fury sounds great - bright and ballsy...somewhat akin to the Super Ferrite to my ears. I'm assuming that the Hi-A in your Fury is the split-P model?

I'm hoping to use my Hi-A Jazz pickup in my passive Unity, just to add some of that aggressive tone displayed in your link.

Yes, it's a Hi-A split-coil (i.e. P-style) pickup. It's a vintage pickup, but I guess they probably still make something that's more or less the same.

If anyone's interested I'm looking to move my Peavey Millennium Plus 4 string. Great bass but I am a 5 string guy and this one will seldom get used. Plus I'm GASsing for a Mark Bass setup. You know the deal, it has a MM / J pickup config, 18v electronics and the Millennium preamp that has the mid sweep. Sounds and plays great! The finish is flawless. The knobs are a little scratchy but nothing that a little contact cleaner wouldn't fix. Here are some pics.

Thanks, Stu. The Hi-A I have actually has "Hi-A" embossed on it, rather than "Bartolini" - I was told that mine may be the older generation. It's probably still a good one and it's worth dropping it in the Unity as an experiment.

BTW - I recognize your username from the Dodge Ram Forum as well...and maybe Thumpertalk and/or other bike forums as well. I'm not a stalker, it's just a coincidence.

Barts will always get my vote. Bart preamps too. If in doubt, I always go with Barts. I have a used matched P/J set that I bought over a year ago. They won't fit in my Ibanez Musician with its weird neck pickup shape/size. I guess I could let em go to one of you guys for a fair price??? PM me if interested and I'll try to figure out what I've got in em.

All I can say is THANKS for all of the input! Ack's assessment of sounding anemic is dead on and StuartV's Fury sounds great. Next question.....will I be able to use the Dyna preamp with Barts or Dimarzios? I really like the active boost. Thanks!
