I did not think a P-Bass needed shielding but I figured I would do this bass while I was doing the Foundation and Foundation S shielding.
Checked the bridge to the output jack sleeve ground for continuity and it shows continuity.
I did replace the output jack, Peavey had a "switched 1/4" jack" in there and the tip and switch were wired and not the ground (sleeve) terminal which I believe is uncorrect.
After the pickup magnets were glued and dry and the pickups were back in, the signal was intermittent until I put the new jack in, now it makes noise reliably but with hum.
The jack was not a Switchcraft like some other Peavey's I've seen, and the pots are not CTS either which maybe Peavey never used.
I am thinking they were maybe using Peerless jacks at the time, I can't tell the brand of pots but they are full sized and maybe are Alpha, I think they say JS on the back of them.
I will go through all the wires and solder points and see if I can locate the issue.

Since 2 pots, some wire, and a cap are all so cheap - and it sounds like you know what to do with them - I would probably disconnect the pickup and hook it directly to the output jack, just to verify that the hum is gone. If so, then it must be in the pots or wiring, and so I would just put new pots, wire, and a new cap in and be done with it.

I re-soldered the connections on my '94 and everything was quiet after that.
Of course you guys are right about the hum on a P.

Peavey would have never wasted money by using a switched jack. Somebody's been messing around. The original pots could have been CTS, Alps, Noble or Alpha, more than likely the last in a '90s.

For the hum problem, try swapping the pickup leads at the volume pot just for grins. Sometimes it helps. Humbuckers are not always totally hum free. There is some distance between the coils and that may put them in different strength locations in the hum field with one coil being in a slightly stronger place. Both coils have to pick up the field the same for perfect cancellation. Do you have anything that would generate a strong hum field near by? Florescent lights, computer, light dimmers, large power amp? Some wall warts can have a pretty strong field.

I think these pots are Alps or Noble. They are well made full sized pots.

I do have a fluorescent light in that room, but my Foundation S has a Bartolini 8S passive P that is dead silent and a Dimarzio J that is not dead silent, so I know a P pickup can be quiet in this environment.
No proper shielding on that bass either. I am going to swap some things and see if I can figure out what's up.

Got my first Peavey bass en route, should be here in 2 days. USA Cirrus Redwood 4. Pairing it with my Aguilar TH500 and Bergantino CN212. Geeking out. I've never had a neck through 35" scale bass before.

Thank you @kodiakblair,I received the Cirrus on Friday,put fresh strings on it and played a gig that night and the next afternoon with it.Impressed with the comfort and feel of the bass as well as the tone.Spot on!

Ah StrangerDanger.....I see who is getting the latest offering from the good Dr. Cheese. Nice catch...that is a beautiful bass. I think you'll dig the neck on these earlier Cirri and find that the weight of the Redwood/Alder to be very light and comfortable.

Given the scarcity and price of these in Europe I never really considered one,only two came up for sale these last 2 years. 300 mile trip and a probable speeding fine

Holy Smokes !!! It's a thing of wonderous beauty and plays & sounds as good as it looks. With so many fine Peaveys getting posted I held off till today so we can appreciate each one, I mean
gfaulkner & Stranger Danger's Cirrusies ( What's plural for Cirrus ? ) got me drooling and I have one

I may be missing some time while I play with trim pots and explore this thing.

ps. Be very careful with those trim and gain pots. They are VERY easy to turn too hard and break. And Peavey does not have any more stock of the preamp boards for the B Quads.

I noticed where some are experiencing humming,and scratchy pots,on some of the T20's? I sprayed the pots,and jack,with some cleaner,and still getting humming. Moved a few feet away from the amp,and still was getting a humming. Probably take it and get the wiring checked now. I posted a picture earlier. Can I get a number?
