I've got a question....How different does an 80's Dyna sound from a passive Foundation?

In passive mode they sound basically the same. Same PUs with VVT on the Foundation and VBT on the Dyna. There are some very minor differences in tonality that can be had with VVT that can't be had with VBT and vice versa. As far as the preamp, it's one of my favorites. Extremely versatile, IMO. I have 11 Peavey USA basses with that pre (or the RJ IV variation) with Super Ferrites, passive P/J, active humbuckers, passive VFLs or active VFLS and like them all.

If you can buy a Dyna at about the same price as a Foundation, get the Dyna. Battery life is only about 80 hours but it is 1980s tech.

Got my Foundation in last night. I am in love with this bass. Nice fast action and it just sounds great. Easy to play with all 4 fingers.

It is truly fantastic. I was a little weary when I ordered it. In the pictures it made it look like the paint was all messed up and the screws and bridge were all rusted. That is not the case. For something being 24 years old, it is mint. A few chips in the paint but nothing major. Only thing it needs is a new set of strings. I don't know how old these ones are, but they are not corroded. After that it is good to go. I have gained a lot of respect for Peavey and it really makes me want to get some more vintage Peavey's. Next in line will be a T40. Then a dyna bass. Or maybe a dyna bass first. I am curious about the active pick ups on that sweet bass. I won $1750 at the casino last night, so I think I'll buy a nice dyna bass with some of the money and probably a hard case for it. Maybe I can find one that comes with a case. We will see!

Peavey Dyna-Bass Made in USA

Is this a fair deal? I don't know the going rate. I got my Foundation for $180 dollars. After shipping and all that jazz it came to about $220. Looking at the guitar now, I think I got one hell of a deal. I don't want to spend money and get ripped off. So I'm just wonder how much the dyna basses are worth.

That is super nice. I've never played a 5 string but I've always wanted to. I'd buy one.

at the nut but the Dyna has an adjustable bridge so you'll have some leeway with string spacing.

You'd also be killing 2 birds with stone, 1st Dyna and 1st 5'er all rolled into one

Peavey Pros - how do the TL and Dyna relate to each other? And how is the preamp compared to a Millenium or Cirrus?

About a month ago I saw a.Dyna in fair condition at cerritos ca guitar center, I think they wanted $279. It looked to be early/mid 80s. It was a dark greenish Grey with a hint of flake, matching headstock, and I think the back of the neck was painted too. It was only a brief look, I never took it off the wall, they were closing soon and I was just using it as a neutral meeting place for a bass trade, with the bonus of having amps to plug into. No peaveys were involved in the trade.

I'm spoiled, I got my foundation with a case for $40, very very beat up, I think it was crushed by something heavy while in the case. I do like it a lot, some things are just meant to be I guess. If I ever had to sell it I'm sure I could get $100+ for it. But my regrets of letting my fury go for $100 will likely prevent that. Would rather have the bass than $100.

1984 Fury – My most recent acquisition. Ash body, maple neck. First gen was old T-20 renamed. Second gen became a true P type bass. I accidentally bought it in Reno in October, and after tuning it up a bit, I’m falling deeply in love with this thing! It has become my favorite bass to play.

1989 DynaBass – The first bass I bought was a black DynaBass in 1991. It got stolen in 2000. I had lined for another for a long while, and found “Red” for sale on The TalkBass forum in 2008ish. I LOVE that beast!!!

1998 Fury – A fine P bass for less than a Fender. It’s not as “cool” as having a real Precision Bass… But then, I was never cool.

2011 Millenium AC 5 String – One of my old bands was having a reunion, and I played mostly 5 string on our songs. Problem was… I no longer had a 5er. I found this for a bargain. Not their top of the line model, but it does have the same electronics and pickups of their more expensive Cirrus bass… Which I wants btw.

Oh… And the thing hanging on the wall with the squares is an early “Acoustic Frames” prototype.

. The one of the left is the 1984 Fury? I love the looks. Awesome natural finish with the black pick guard. Me rikey. Looks like it's in fine condition.

Yep. The wood rings when you play it. Even without an amp, you can hear every note you play. I've never had a bass quite like it. You can really make it snarl and grunt.

I have some questions for the Fury\Forum owners:

I purchased a 1990s Peavey Forum PJ last summer and have been enjoying it a lot. It is beat to h3ll, but plays pretty good. I'm wondering if I can get from "pretty good" to great.
The original tuners are getting a little tight. Have any of you replaced your tuners, and if so, with what?
The bridge is pretty beat up too. Are there any good replacements out there?
Finally, my P pickups seem to tip forward slightly towards the neck. Instead of the top of the pickups running parallel to the body and the string, they are pitched forward 10 or 20 degrees. I crammed a bunch of foam under the front of the pickup, but it is still doing it. It that the design of these basses?

The pickups are probably suspended by springs rather than foam underneath. Technically, pickups should be parallel to the strings not the body, so leaning forward is probably not much of a problem.
