So yeah the inner part of the peg has been worn down to the point that it won't hold on under pressure. Time to replace that machine head unfortunately...

Do you, or anyone else, happen to know if any of the Hipshot HB series tuners will fit this mounting pattern and bore hole?
Well I don't know on that instrument but I replaced the ones on my cirrus with standard gotah style tuners

Made in USA, probably 1990-1995, very nice neck, good tuners, good basic bridge, good body wood, maybe a great pickup and maybe not, all parts easily replaced and swapped out.
It will say Fury on the front of the headstock and will say made in USA or crafted in USA, there will be a serial number on the back of the headstock that will allow you to get an exact date Peavey shipped the bass.
How much are they asking for it?
They can be had for $100.
I got one for less than half that.
I've seen people ask up to $250 for them lately.
They are good USA made P basses worth many times more than they sell for.
Not sure if it will be a good as your USA Precision was, but close enough.

It has the truss rod cover, so it is likely pre 94, we can see enough to see that it is block logo with no pinstripe on the headstock, but seeing the shape of the headstock would be helpful. I'm guessing it is the same as my 93, very rounded off headstock. If it has full sized pots, and the pickup has black and white leads, that are not super tiny thin, then it is the better pickup (USA made), maybe not as good as the early 5 wire pickup, but much better than the imported squier grade pickup with the really thin wires, usually red and blue. Mini pots (dime sized) are usually a sign of all import low end electronics that are best upgraded.
People are asking way too much for them nowadays, and the fair priced ones get picked up fast. I paid $72 for my 93, but it is beat to hell and I would have felt better at $50, but it was a pawnshop that wanted $99 on eBay and wasn't getting bids and kept getting relisted. I bonded with it quickly.

I seriously doubt your peg is worn out. Strings, especially NPS, are made of softer metal than the pegs. The suggestion about inserting it further into the hole (huh huh) is worth considering though. You want a sharp 90 degree bend there, and another sharp bend in the orthogonal plane where the string begins winding around the perimeter of the peg.
Got me a US made Peavey Accelerator, Six string short scale picolo bass with locking tremolo. EBay. Should have it on Wednesday next week. I would admit that it's a guitar, but we simply don't use such language here on talkbass.
If there's anybody in the UK checks in and is looking for a sweet red Foundation. There's one on UK eBay ending tomorrow,1 bid at £100. Sadly I can't justify another Foundation. I'll post the link if anybody asks.
Someone needs to jump on that Foundation....as for me I could easily justify another Foundation....one with flats, one with rounds or tapes, one tuned BEAD...love em.
