Has anyone played a USA Cirrus 5 with Ebony fingerboard? (it would have been a custom shop bass)

If so, how would you contrast the tonal differences between Ebony and standard Pao Ferro fingerboard on this instrument (all else being the same)?

Check with TB Mod Embellisher... he's got a tiger eye Cirrus with the ebony board.

Bonus is it came with the new Peavey gig bag, an extra set of strings and a nice leather strap. I'm really stoked about this baby, I've only played 5'rs at Guitar Center for a few minutes. Time to bone up on it before Sunday morning. :bassist:

Wow you got a beaut!!!! A shop near me has a gold one like that NOS in their shop. I don't want to play it.

Oh yeah, played it last night, it's like butter in my hands. It's as nice or nicer than anything I've ever played at the guitar stores. I'll have to tweak the string height and check intonation and stuff, but it plays beautifully with great tone, even through my little Laney practice amp. The B-string is a bit buzzy, but I'll play with that a bit as well and swap out the strings if it still does it. Now I just have to bring up my game to match my axe. :D

I bet it would. I don't think there's anything special about these switches... it's actually a pretty standard style. Digi-key probably has zillions of them as well.

Anyone ever see a G bass with a black painted neck instead of clear? (so you can see the graphite fiber....)

I just bought one off here, got it and the neck was painted, kinda bummed. That was one of the coolest things about the G bass, the look of the neck.

As I understand it, they're two different necks that are different materials.

One is like a (or even made by) Moses neck, which is a composite graphite material like a Zon, tho not nearly as nice of a material. I had a Gv with that kind of neck that IMHO did not sound good... the neck was too soft. I don't think it's paited... I think that's what the material looks like... again, just like a Zon but not nearly as nice of a material.

The other is a (and maybe made by) Modulus, which is carbon fiber, and the one that has a clear gloss finish. I've never played one of those, but I'm betting those sound much better.

As far as I know, there's no such thing as graphite fiber. There's graphite, and carbon fiber.

Hi Fellow Peavey Owners ^_^

......Seems all I have been playing lately are my T40 and my Fender P. I dunno if thats my 'answer' on what to do with the rest of my basses.... but that leads me to another dilemma maybe? I learned to play on a P neck, T40s have P necks, my Precision has a *gasp*... Pneck... (duhhhh :p) yet the narrow J style neck on my Dyna and Foundation and soon to be Squier VMJ just blow me away. If I can chose, I would chose a J neck but yet I always go back to a P neck... I'm not sure what I am trying to get at here. I feel I play a J neck better but playing a P neck doesn't bother me -- its what I learned on. This is probably a stupid question but, is it unusual to go from one style neck to the other? Is it odd to prefer one style (J) more but yet have ones favorite bass come factory with a different style neck? (IE the T40 -- Pneck). I guess I am trying to settle down with a certain style neck but at the same time, I shouldn't have to, right? Theres nothing wrong with bouncing from J to P whenever the mood strikes eh?

Sorry for all the weird questions...:p

IMO it depends on the style you're playing, and the application.

If I'm playing a faster-tempo metal piece, I tend to grab my more narrow(as you put it) Jazz style necked basses.

On the same token, if I'm trying to get funky :bassist: with a more slap/pop style, the piece is crying for a P.

I have a few of my basses modified to have the same pickups and I put the same strings on them, the necks are just different widths. So they sound almost the same, I can just play the specific pieces with more ease.


(I think thats what you were asking. Sorry if I went off on a long tangent unrelated to your original question. :p)

I don't want to sound condescending (honestly!), but simply look at it. :)

If it looks plain black (like a Moses or Zon), it's the graphite composite. If you can see the carbon fibers (like on a Modulus), it's carbon fiber.

No that was a great answer. ^_^ I just wasn't sure if I was being some freak having basses with both style necks and preferring one yet /used/ to the other and bouncing between the two. And yea, there are some things I play that are better and easier on the Jazz style neck. :bassist:

It's weird I thought I preferred the neck on my Foundation but it turns out that I don't. While I do like it after playing my T-40 it feels a little cramped especially when you get into those lower notes like from about G to F it gets real skinny(look at the nut width difference in the pic of my basses it's kinda crazy)and I have big hands and long fingers. I can go back and forth but I think I'm actually starting to dig wider necks which shouldn't be that much of surprise because I learned on a P-copy.

I have long fingers as well and I also learned on a Pbass neck but I seem to gravitate toward the J neck style...but still play the Pneck style more (go figure). When I first got my Foundation the neck seemed wide to me for some freaky reason. Yet the more I played it the smoother and more narrow the neck felt. Of course it still feels a tad wide compared to my Dyna bass. THATS a neck that is narrrooowwwww. Going from it to my T40 or visa versa is a shock for a few minutes LOL
