I liked the P/J configuration on the fender so when this Foundation S came along I succumbed. I plan to go heavier on the strings but I'll keep this one nickle roundwounds D'Addario XlS230. The others are Precision Flats Regular gauge now.

Any idea why Peavey put surrounds/rings around the P and J pickups on some of the Foundation S basses? I find it weird. I know they had routing templates.
What does it look like under the rings?
Like they shouldn't have bothered with the surrounds which crack. The paint looks as it should.

I would rather have plain rear mounts like the Fender PPD. I believe some other Foundation S versions have done without the rings. Are the active vs. passive P/Js tied to rings/no rings?
I honestly don’t know. I need to look in the cavity. The pickups DO look like EMGs. I’m out of town and can’t look.
Mine is active and has no surrounds.

I took my Forum P/J 4 to a local blues/rock jam session last night. The house amp is an old Fender 115 cab powered by a Crate head. The last time I went I took my Squier VM P V and it sounded just okay. The Forum sounded fantastic. It was inspiring to play.
My ‘85 Foundation arrived today! Even the case is kind of old school cool. My main rig is at our rehearsal space so I plugged it into my daughters little Ampeg BA110 practice amp. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot out of either either of them but the old Peavey just about punched a hole in the wall! I was tweaking knobs just to try and contain the beast. What an animal this thing is and the neck is absolutely effortless to play.
Somewhere in the archives of TB, someone had mentioned the All Parts trussrod box wrench. When I saw it, I ordered one and it too arrived today. Only need about a quarter turn and it was good to go. Again, the neck is really something special. Might mess around a bit with the pickup heights, but really got a lot good (and different) sounds right out of the box. Going to get a little more familiar with it before I decide on new strings.
Anyway, there’s the report. I’ll try to search old posts on these Foundation basses so I don’t drive you guys crazy.

Hi Runnerman, I was just reading the Peavey Foundation appreciation thread. Played it through my Two Notes Le Bass pedal for awhile tonight and am really impressed by it. Kind of set up a clean, warm tube sound on the pedal and was surprised by how much tonal versatility I was getting using just the controls on the bass itself. Lots of good stuff in that tone knob between 2 and 8 (even if the pots are right handed). I’ve found some settings I’m anxious to try with the full band. It’s definitely a keeper so thank you in advance for a number.

Glad you are liking your bass, the Foundation is right up there with all my favorite basses. I love Jazz Basses, but the Foundation is a touch cooler and a whole lot more affordable, IMHO. I used to have a 85 fretless and 93. I currently own a 84 Foundation, 85 Dynabass and 87 Patriot (w/added neck PU), all with Super Ferrites, the bomb pickups! Also have a 94 Forum Plus with some custom wiring and such.
As mentioned, don't be shy, we love to talk about our Peaveys!

I LOVE Foundations ! I remember when they were new in the 80's and there were so many choices. They were awesome then and time has told us that they are STILL awesome and I'll take one over a Fender ANYDAY, but then again, I'm a Peavey bass fan - So I'll ALWAYS choose Peavey ! Congratulations on your new Foundation and the fact that you have a daughter who also plays bass is pretty rad !
One of my friends who heard me play the Forum P/J at the jam last week contacted me asking about the bass. Now he is looking for one. Yeah, it sounds that good.
I don't notice anyone talking about bridge upgrades on Peavey as much as Fender. Peavey bridges don't seem all that beefy. At least mine don't. Are bridge upgrades not that effective? Or is it that replacement bridges don't fit on Peavey very well?
The only Peavey I have that has a bridge that could be considered as one needing an upgrade is my Forum P/J and that bass sounds so good I would not change anything on it. The bridge is made like an older Fender bridge and works just fine.
My other Peavey basses are Cirrus and Millennium and came from the factory with very good bridges.
In the past, I have only changed bass bridges when there was a mechanical reason for doing so. My first 5 string was a very cheap Washburn that had a lousy bridge on it which I changed out for a Schaller. The Schaller was much easier to adjust and looked much better to boot.
My other Peavey basses are Cirrus and Millennium and came from the factory with very good bridges.
