Man I’m digging that Marshall head you have in that pic. I played through one at a shop in the mid 90’s and it was the biggest, ballsiest tone I’ve ever heard. Made an Ampeg sound like tin in comparison.

Yup, one of my favorite made in the 90's. Huge tone!

That looks to be a little older, probably an 88 or 89. Nice bass in fact I think there is one like it on Reverb right now.

I bought an 86 Peavey Foundation S new and I still have mine. And it still comes out on gigs pretty regularly too.

Yes, I saw that one. Asking a bit too much for it. They also had one a couple of days ago just like it on Guitar Center, but I don't see it now. Maybe it was picked up. They had it for a good price.

It's a great bass amp. I think what killed it was the fact the Marshall simple doesn't stock or market it's bass products. It's a 200 watt amp that can operate up to 2000 watts rms, so you can get stupid amounts of clean head room provided you have a good cab. With an efficient cab...the results are even better.

Some of this historic info on TB made me chuckle. I think people read 200 watts and gave up on it, or either their conscious bothers them about it. Fantastic amp that get plenty loud and I have gigged this amp before.

The Sansamp Landmark 300 is another amp that gets looked over. Players won't give it a chance because it's 300 watts. However, it's a RPM and RBI paired with a power amp. People will drop $200 for the standalone pre's alone but fail to realize they're in the Landmark. With an efficient cab, it's more than plenty of power.

Lots of good amps suffered due to player ignorance and in-efficient power hungry cab designs.

I find that any more I don't want a head with a lot of power. I have a Streamliner 900 that can get stupid loud but I rarely have it up past 9 on the master. I also have a 1980 Musicman HD150 that puts out 150 or 100 watts but most of the time it is run at 100 watts. A GK 400RBII thats around 200 watts and I have an Oliver Powerflex 502 that is in the shop getting rebuilt. It puts out just over 70 watts. Outside the Genz these are all relatively low power options.

My first bass was a Foundation S that was purchased new in 1990 (or 1991 - can't remember exact date). Sorry for the shirt-less photo, but it's the only one I have of that old bass (I was probably 20yrs old here). Wishing that I never got rid of it now!

A Foundation S sat in a shop on consignment for years (a Peavey dealer no less).

I cant remember but i think it was passive, anyway the old fella played country gigs and had a set of worn flats on it...the salesman i know mentioned it likely didnt sell because it had flats on it LOL!

Kind of funny considering its 'Peavey country' where i live but this young salesman couldnt understand 'thumpy bass' LOL!

Hopefully the old fella will bring it back in to sell but he went back to that Foundation S after going thru several (expensive) basses...i dont need another bass but if this Foundation S ever shows up again in the shop i may buy it if its not heavy...the worn flats are a plus for me doing blues/R&B stuff!

I'm going to pause my search for a G or GV Bass for a little while I just don't seem to be turning up anything to my liking so I'm looking at different US models. I find myself torn between a US Millennium or a US Cirrus and in truth I think I'm leaning towards the Millennium.

I have a use for a 4 or a 5 as long as the 4 has a detuner. Been looking at Reverb primarily and there are several Millenniums to chose from. Even one that popped up today but has the guts changed to Bartolini pups and preamp. What do you guys think?

I am always amazed at folks that change the electronics in Millennium or Cirrus basses. The OEM electronics are one of the reasons these basses are so good. I would wait for one to pop us that is all original.

At one point, I was gigging with 2 Ashdown 30 watt Little Bastard tube amps and no PA support. It worked fine and I loved my tone! Of course, I was using 2 efficient cabs (an old Carvin 18 and another cab w/ two 10s I believe) w/ a Radial ABY somewhere on my pedalboard.

Now, I gig w/ a Streamliner 900. I have 2 of them: 1 for rehearsals and/or gigs that require a minimalist approach (1 small cab, a small sized amp, 1 bass), and the 2nd is screwed on a rack shelf and housed in a 6 space SKB case that I also squeeze either my pedalboard or a bag full of speakons, cables, batteries and strings into. I take the racked one to the gigs that need my 2 cab setup, to which I drive an SUV. My minimalist rig can fit in my 2 door coupe.

My 2nd favorite amp, behind the STM 900 is my '70s Fender Super Twin (1976 IIRC) like this one For Sale - Fender Super Twin 180W tube head (see also: Studio Bass) . 180 watts of tube power is plenty to power my regular rig of 2 Aggie DB112NTs, or my rehearsal cab SWR Big Bertha 2x15.

I also have an old Eden WT800 from 1996 that has been mod'd to fix this model's one weakness, some cheap components that were prone to getting too hot and failing. This amp sounds great too! I should blow the dust off of it and gig it sometime!

Big ups to the T45! Lots of good, usable tones in that bass!

As for amps, I play a variety of amps with lowish to middlin' power levels. Preference is a decently powerful amp turned down. I do play my 100w Peavey Century 200 quite a bit, as it gives that perfect, 70s classic tone when on the edge. The Bassman Ten is great for lower volume, too.

Also play the little TC BH250 head or the Markbass CMD121P combo regularly. These work great in 1x12" situations and are plenty loud. However, most gigs that I would use those amps are now IEM, so it's the 0w Bass Fly Rig.
If the urge rises to tote some classic, racked up, class AB amps-it would be the 95 Eden WT500 or 03 GK 400RB III.

Amps? Yes, I have some!

I use a little Roland Cube 100 at church. It is aimed at me and I use it as a stage monitor and a line goes to the house system. Sounds fantastic. It is an amazingly great little combo.

I have a TC Electronic BG250-210 that I used recently on a gig where I doubled on upright and electric. It sounded great with my Millennium Plus 5. By the way, the tone print is pretty much just two knobs I keep turned off. Lousy sounding effects IMO.

My big rig is a pair of Aguilar GS 112's powered by one of several heads. Lately I have been favoring my Aguilar AG 700 and that is one great sounding and loud rig. I also own and use some Genz Benz Shuttle and Shuttlemax heads that I use when the mood hits me. They also sound wonderful and have great power through the GS 112's.

I also own a pair of Aguilar SL 112's and use them for upright bass with an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500. They sound fine for upright but I much prefer the GS 112's for electric bass.

Then there is a Phil Jones C4 that I use with the TH 500 for upright in small rooms where floor space is limited. It is a very fine sounding cabinet and a joy to transport due to its light weight and small size.

The amp in my rehearsal room is an Aguilar GS 212 that I no longer care to move about. It is usually powered by one of my Genz Benz Shuttle heads and my 9.0 has been the one for the last 3 months or so. Sounds great.

Sold almost all my amps and a few basses and guitars when I moved to a smaller place earlier this year. In my band I play with a Sansamp BDI and I don't miss an amp/cab setup. I kept a couple sentimental Fender amps....
a Blues Jr which in my office and my practice amp for bass. I have a Super Six Reverb in storage that I need to decide what to do with. Used to play bass with it through an EV voiced Mesa cab which I sold and it sounded very nice....mainly studio because it's a beast to move around.

Hey Tim - I've been curious about the Trace Elliot Elf. Seems like you can't go wrong with sticking an amp in your gig bag - Imagine saying that in the 80's or 90's ! How's the tone ? TE trademark tone ? Or new Peavey owned tone ?
