That seems to be case with more Peavey models than not.
A split P Fury is a P Bass, but most everything else other than standard PJ's (Forum PJ) have a unique sound because Peavey made their own pickup designs and pre-amp designs and put pickups in the locations they felt like putting them.

Certainly the case on my T45, the pickup is in the P position but the tone circuit allows you to get a full “humbucker” fatness, and a good P vibe and even some J like tones.

True! My T45 'tribute' (I call it RB45) gets P-ish tones and a pretty accurate Ric bridge tone (split mode--rear coil active). The Q filter that I installed (and tuned to 450-500Hz) can get the bass into deep, island dub tones, too.

I appreciate Fender for who they are, who they were, and for what Leo started.
It takes a special person to continue to drive/innovate/create as Leo Fender did, the Fender company has been without it's visionary since he sold the company to CBS and moved forward with his next project.
What Fender has done is kept Leo's memorial candle burning and nothing more, and that is really not their fault, it seems to be what their customers want.
Musicman has had the same fate since Leo left.
G&L has done more, but other people there were encouraged to be part of the creative process from the get go.
Hartley Peavey didn't leave, he kept driving forward so the innovation went on for much longer.

IMHO, the best, post-Leo time with Fender was around the time when Dan Smith took the reins. Just before the CBS era hung up it's hat, Fender was really trying to be more 'modern.' The simplified Standards, the original Elite line and the Rivera designed amps were all rather different from the Fender products pre 1983. The amps had gain and switchable channels, the instruments got flatter radii and medium jumbo frets.
They got back to basics after the private ownership took over in 1985. Smaller production numbers, a a mindful focus on straight ahead, well done instruments in order to win back those that were disillusioned as the 70s wore on. The 83/84 as well as the 86-88 era instruments are real soft spots for me, I have a few from this short era and they are all keepers for life. Of course the post CBS plan worked, Fender is bigger than ever now.

Fender...blah blah, back to the Peavey thread! I grew up on Fenders and Peaveys and continue to love both to this day. Those Peaveys (especially from the 80s) have a soft spots with me too. The Foundation will always be the better J bass to me!

Inworked in an electronics repair shop 2003-2006. We were authorized for Fender and Peavey (as well as a handful of others) The Fender amps coming in were 'easy' enough to work on, but not as easy as (most of) the Peavey. And Peavey was built a lot better.

The late 70's and early 80's Fender amps were especially cringe-worthy.

The Palaedium that was recently bought off of GC's website reminded me of the little known fact that Peavey produced another bass that sounds very similar to the Palaedium.

I recently bought a last model Dyna 5 off GC's site and was amazed to find that in passive mode it sounds almost exactly like a 5 string Palaedium. It easily cops that growly tone since it is equipped with humbuckers hooked to a blend and passive tone control (in passive mode) which is the same as the Palaedium. The bass sounds best to me in passive mode.....odd but it sounds rich and warm in passive and somewhat....hard to describe...less rich in active mode. Don't get me wrong, it sounds very good in active mode but just kills in passive mode.

There are two of these basses up for sale. One on Ebay that may have an electronics problem and one on Music Go Round that is priced a little high (still easily worth the price IMO).

There was also a 4 string version made of this bass and I assume it sounds similar to the 5. The 5 has a very good B string for 34" scale, by the way.

That's GREAT stuff to know, Chuck !! Thanks. For those of us that aren't as lucky to find a Palaedium like The Bass Abides (the Dude is my hero !) bought (add that it even looks mint to me ! LUCKY !!) it's good to know that an 80's Dyna in passive will cop that tone. Dyna's are WAY easier to find. GREAT INFO there !!

I have a feeling under the red one is a mohagony. I have NOTHING to base that on other than the appearance. The headstock and neck just look really dark compared to the white one.

Out of curiousity, what are some general thoughts on the T-20? I have one that resides at our vacation home. I got it a whole back, and I hate to admit, I have never taken the time to give it a good cleaning, change strings, etc. Next time I’m there, it might come home with me and get a good set up!

Wonderful! With one angled Super Ferrite. Nice slim fast neck. I would love to own one.

I think the T20 and Gen 1 (Slant) Fury sound great.
I am a fan of Super Ferrite pickups and a fan of single pickup basses.
