Foundations never had VFL pickups. They did have single coils in the same size/shape shells.

Yes I know that they are singles and are different than a “true” VFL but isn’t that what they are popularly referred to to differentiate them from super ferrites?
Just to let you all know, a fellow Peavey Club member has BURNED me for $350 bucks on a neck and body I bought over a month ago. We did the deal off Talkbass, my mistake for trusting a fellow brother.

From what I can tell, the controls were changed over to a standard VVT setup, and the preamp all but gutted.
For the record -- it wasn't me. I'm the quiet and good one in the group.

Well, I just shipped 2 T-40 pickups off Monday (yesterday) morning that I received payment for Saturday. I was waiting in the parking lot when the local USPS opened. Did the deal with no listing anywhere. Some of us believe in doing the right thing, always! Don't lose faith. Hopefully, things will work out for you.

This was my first time pushing the fire was through my poweramp and it was so clean almost digital ? Like it sounded so clear in all frequency’s but still had a tight bottom
A Super Ferrite in the P sweet spot sounds amazing. That's coming from someone who is incredibly biased towards Super Ferrites!
Honestly, it may be one of the best pickup designs of the 20th century. The reasons I don't have a Gen 1 Fury or T20...
1. I truly prefer 2 pickup basses. They are more pragmatic to my situation.
2. I already have a few basses with SFs in that spot. Another one wouldn't offer me much tonal variety.
3. They don't come in 5 string versions. I really don't need any more 4s.
4. One hasn't popped up locally for the bargain prices they sold for 10+ years ago. I miss the <$150 Peavey days.
5. I really don't need another bass!
Honestly, if Peavey made a 5 string Slant SF Fury and it was less than $200, it would be a no brainer.
For me, there are three must have Peavey basses:
Slant Fury (my favorite body shape of all Peavey basses).
Split P Fury Gen 2 (that same body shape as the Slant) - just a really great Precision Bass with a better body and a better neck.
Patriot - a bass that sounds different than anything else.
The Slanted Super Ferrite in the Gen 1 Fury/T20 is a different pickup than what is in a Patriot or a Foundation and does sound different.
I really, really like the ash bodied Slant Fury I bought from Mech last year, it sounds great and is physically just a nice bass in size/shape/weight/balance.
Slant Fury (my favorite body shape of all Peavey basses).

I had one a few years ago. That price is ridiculous though. Although I have yet to see one as low as I got mine for, from GC. I went in trying to snag the $129 or 139 fury I had seen on the previous visit, which was gone, but a milestone II was on the wall for a whopping .... $59. I'm sure there are posts from me about it way back on this thread in 2016. Pretty sure it was Korean, and not a bad bass. But I would feel like a chump if I paid more than $100-125 for one. I paid it forward and sold it to someone who drives a BMW (ok my therapist) for I think $100 with an old rumble 15 I paid $20 for. I had picked up my first foundation and 2nd fury (first was bought for $100 from a friend back in probably 96 or 97, he got it in 94) and foolishly sold it around 99 or 2000 for about the same), so I didn't really need to keep a Korean bass.
There is one about 100 miles from me (in the wrong direction). But prices way out of my budget and ad indicates possible neck issues. I miss the days of $100 peaveys. From memory I think it is up around $350. Had 2 87 foundation mahogany up in my area at the same price. Wanted but couldn't afford to get one. Need to replace my 87 mahagony that was stolen.
Had the tone pot removed and logos shaved of the neck. I had shown many pics of it on here when I got it in 2017. For $80 (with a gig bag from the store I got my first guitar at in 91) I want it back.
Had to recently settle for a black one, probably 88-89 (need to date it) fretless conversion, a pot that feels like it has rocks in it, regular sized saddles instead of the fat ones, and a really thrashed peavey hard case for $90. I figured the way prices are now, just getting the body , bridge super ferrite and titan tuners was worth it as I had a fear the truss rod might have issues, still have not confirmed that Because I don't have the tool. After reading some posts and watching a video tonight, it does have a bit of ski jump and the bilaminate seam at the heel end of the board is starting to open, but it is still playable at my usual high ish action, but would be nice to be able to set low action on a fretless and this will require some work to do that. What I did with this bass is coming in my next post.
I just did a neck swap putting an older fretless converted foundation neck on my turn of the century era VFL foundation. (See above for neck notes). I agree the pickups sound really good for fretless. That extra modern-ish bite gives it a boutique ish tone that goes well with fretless.
It has been a couple years since I posted or was active on talkbass. Been through the wringer and back (including 18 months of van life, not by choice), my 87 mahagony foundation being stolen Was a drop in the bucket. Probably about 100k worth of stuff lost in storage breakins when I was not in a position to do anything about it or protect what was left after each break in, until it was pretty much all gone. Insurance wouldn't pay because it was in my moms name, so it was a case of, "hey dude you are starting over, and people got great deals on your stuff so I could score some meth" yes I am 99% sure it was the tweakers that were living in units there.
My 91 pinstripe fury and turn of century foundation VFL were in pawn shops, and my heavy relic 92 fury got drawn all over with red sharpie when I was in a "mood", and was turned down by theives both when my car loaded with gear was in a salvage yard (they scored $6k in telescope gear) and in the above series of storage break ins. It is one of my best basses, really resonant and punch and just feels right, some goo gone took care of 95% of the sharpie which basically saved that bass for me.
87 mahogany, 98 Warwick FNA5 , 2000 AMSTD P bass and my first year OLP MM2 with Warwick/baselines electronics, as well as 6 guitars, were not so lucky. (My Geddy lee jazz was the only item recovered, but I have not picked it up yet though we claimed it right away and they said it was safe with no deadline, though now it is over 2 years, fingers crossed)
Also had my rumble 200 in pawn shops, my other 2 Warwicks, the 2 peaveys mentioned, my 98 AMSTD Jazz, classic pro thunderbird, and 3 guitars. The forced low ball sale of my boat to the marina (which was making me homeless) gave me not much more than I needed to get my stuff out of the pawn shops. Starting over with a still respectable bass collection and one useable amp (but no extension cab). Recently jumped at a used rumble 210 cab that was on the GC website so I am gig ready.
And got that $90 foundation fretless beater, and a peavey raptor custom as a cheap guitar recently.

So with the fretless converted foundation I picked up, I decided to swap necks with my VFL foundation.
I now have 2 "new" foundations that seem to both be better than they were before. I figured the fretless one would just be so so, but it seemed to work really well on that maple body foundation with the "VFL" single coils. And I was pleasantly surprised at how well that later one piece neck worked with the older SF foundation body. I still fantasize about getting the 87 back but it is not likely to happen. I regret not snagging it and the Warwick and a couple guitars that weren't taken in the first break in, but at the time people were also getting into my boat and stealing things so that's why I left them there. Bad choice though but can't change it.
The neck fit super snug into the older SF body like they were precision fit to each other. The older neck into the newer VFL body had lots of play and it had to be pushed all the way to one side to line up. I made a makeshift shim from cut bread clips and business cards.
The fretted one is going to the next band practice for sure. Originally I wanted to bring it as the fretless but since I don't feel as confident on fretless since I have not been playing fretless since I left my old Korean squier p bass fretless project abandoned for at least 20 years (and I think they took that neck, but left the body, but I hope to find it in there when I finally deal with the rest of the ransacked storage).
Here are some pics, I didn't take any close pics of the original form of the new to me foundation, nor of the old one before I swapped necks, but I do have the CL ad pics and old pics of the VFL bass somewhere (or not as I lost many pics as well, phones stolen and gotten wet over the years)
I have a pic I took of my 91 fury and the new one sitting next to my rig before I decided to put the fretless away and just use the 2 furys for the band audition a few weeks ago, that I am including, and a pic of the "after" for each that I just took tonight. And the 4 pics from the CL ad of the black foundation as well, and the final thumbs are some pics of my 87 that I happened to have downloaded off of old facebook posts of it. Was the best $80 I spent on a bass ever. Don't think I will be lucky enough to have that happen again.
Since the 87 had a triangle string tree, I am pretty sure the new one is 88 or 89, straight 3 string tree and block foundation lettering with pointy peavey logo pinstripe headstock, my 91 has script fury and pointy/pinstripe.
I have wanted to eventually strip off the chipped up red paint and hope that the natural grain is not ugly mishmash of unmatched wood pieces. The black one has lots of dents from previous owners but they don't show the wood, so from a distance it looks ok. Since I can't afford the prices people want , I have to accept what I can get in my sub $100 finds. (I paid $140 for my 91 after I was beaten to the punch when it was up for $100 with a case, it was relisted by buyer and he kept the case and made $40, and I got a fury with titan tuners and 5 wire.) My red foundy was a whopping $40 with thrashed case (discussed here in 2016) and my heavy relic 92 was $72 also discussed here in 2016)
