U.S. Women's Soccer

I watch them whenever I catch them on TV, but I only really look for them if it's the World Cup. I don't really know who the players are though, so I might not be what some would call a fan.

I think in certain ways they play better than the men's team, especially when it comes to shooting on goal.

Physicality of the women's game is unreal. I usually go see some US summer league games featuring elite collegiate players. Not huge attendance so you can get down close to the sidelines.

The sound of the collisions going for headers and 50-50 balls is gut wrenching. Flesh and bone weren't designed to withstand that.

And when the women get slammed down hard on the turf, miracle of miracles, they shake it off, get back up, and rejoin the action without theatrics. None of the dramatic dying gladiator nonsense that the men are so good at. The flopping elite international men are fragile, time-wasting boxes of facial tissues by comparison.

What an amazing athlete. A goal-scoring machine, to be sure, but that's only part of her game: Unlike most strikers, she is also an assist machine, and she drops back to play defense when needed. Plus, she's tough as nails: Defenses try to stop her by beating her up physically, but it doesn't work. On a team that's packed with talent all the way down the bench, she's playing the game at a whole other level.

A good (family) friend plays professionally, and, yes, she is tough as nails. She's quite tall, so she is often the go-to for headers off a cross, and has sustained a number of concussions and other head injuries and soldiers on. She is way more hardcore than I am.

Has anybody else been watching any of the NWSL? Fox Sports televised one game each of the last few weeks of the regular season, as well as the playoffs, which has been a great chance to see a lot of national-team members in action as well as some exciting up-and-comers. Last night's final was epic!

I will watch what I can of the Cup but I'll be traveling for the next 10 days or so with the family so it will be difficult to catch a lot of the opening week or so. I follow the men more than the women. I'm pretty pumped to go watch the men play in the Gold Cup in July in Dallas.

So great to have a thread on this and I'd love to hang out in it but can we please have a moratorium on posting scores and results until 8 hours after a match for the duration of the tournament?

Some of us will be relying on the DVR to watch the matches and struggling to avoid learning the scores beforehand. This might be a cool thread and I don't want to stop watching it because of spoilers.

That was just a friendly men's game I mentioned, nothing to do with the Women's World Cup. I will certainly respect a no spoilers mandate in this thread if that's the general consensus. I don't have a DVR, so it's live or nothing for me though.

Yeah, I know. Sorry Wind. I was having a bad day. I had no right to even start typing that. You're 100% good on this. Spoil away and let the team hear ya when they win.

Fortunately I caught myself being a douche before the liquid left the bottle. I only left the original text up there to teach myself a publically humiliating lesson about posting without the brain engaged.

I don't really follow the Women's National Team that much, despite their very impressive record. Still, I can't believe that the whole issue of the 2015 Women's World Cup being played on turf surfaces has not gotten more play. Hell, I learned about it by watching John Oliver excoriate FIFA for doing so because the players are suffering some horrendous leg injuries from the artificial surface.

The tournament starts tonight, with host Canada v China at 6:00 EDT on Fox Sports 1. The first U.S. match (v Australia) is Monday night at 7:30.
