Always classy to bad-mouth the opposition after a loss.
Christine is not from La Belle Province, so Quebec secession isn't really up for discussion. Let's not go down that road, I am Quebecois. And not bad-mouthing the opposition. But at least Ireland got $5 million dollars when they got jobbed. Got to love the crooks that are FIFA. Two highly "unusual" calls were the only reason the U.S. wasn't playing for the bronze (as they rightly should have been) in London. And don't think anti-Americanism is at play, I worked and lived in the States for 14 years, loved it and the people there. But those calls were outright larceny.
Well, the ref certainly didn't show the US team any love on Monday night, the way she was playing fast and loose with the yellow cards. The card to Holiday was iffy at best, and the one to Rapinoe shouldn't even have been a foul, much less a card. The cards didn't affect this game, but are a big deal going forward given the ridiculous system they're using in which players carry their card all the way through the quarterfinals. Another card for either of them over the next four games will mean a one-game suspension.
Agree. And no consistency across games. There could have (should have?) been at least a dozen cards shown during the Columbia - Mexico match yesterday, looked more like a full contact hockey game than a soccer match.
Found a couple of articles on the interwebs arguing that the solution to many of the US team's problems is to start Tobin Heath at one of the outside-midfield positions. Geez, I've been saying this for years. Given her amazing ball-control skills and playmaking ability, I just can't understand for the life of me why Jill Ellis has tried both Christen Press and Morgan Brian in that position instead. Press is a natural striker and Brian is a natural central midfielder, and neither has done well on the wing. If Heath doesn't start tonight you'll be able to hear my face-palm from wherever you are.
At least I'll finally get to watch one of the matches live. My timing has been really unlucky so far: I was playing with one of my bands the night of the US team's first match, and attending a concert/festival for the second.

The officiating during the entire Cup thus far seems pretty all over the board. It got to the point that I recall one of the announcers wondering if the refs from different regions were having trouble adapting to the International rules vs. those from their local leagues. And all three of Thailand's goals against Cote d'Ivoire last week were from blatantly offside positions and the line judge missed all three. Brutal.

Yes, and it's a shame, some great teams and some real good soccer. We can only hope they pick the better refs for the knockout portion. We are real lucky up here, there are at least a couple of games on TV most days.
Halftime of the Germany-France match. The French are putting on a clinic and running circles around a German team that looks shell-shocked, but somehow have failed to put anything on the board yet. By all means tune in for the second half if you're reading this in time: This is some great football -- much better than anything we've seen from the U.S. so far.
In my opinion, there is no greater injustice in the world of sports than soccer (football) matches being decided by penalty kicks.
I didn't have a dog in the France-Germany fight, but it just pains me to see the outcome of an otherwise great match decided this way. Play for two hours, then flip a coin to choose a winner. I am so disappointed.

On the plus side (for us Yanks), the US team looked WAY better last night against China than they've looked all year.
Did you see the two players bang their heads together?! That could've been real bad. As it was, there was a lot of blood. I've done that before playing soccer. Not pleasant at all. The German woman played again, but I'm not sure if the American did. Good game though!
Yes, the American (Morgan Brian) did continue after undergoing a concussion protocol.
It was great to finally see the real U.S. team show what they are capable of. I'm sure there will be naysayers out there griping about missed opportunities and officiating, but I don't think anyone can dispute that the U.S. was the better team on the pitch and deserved to win.

Yeah, I'm completely hooked now. The women's game is far better to watch than the men's game. The women are tough as nails, never flop, and don't have over-emoted death scenes every time anything happens. Plus, the American women have far better ball control skills than the American men. I couldn't watch the Germany-France match, but my wife said some of the same things others have said here: France were the better team. A France-USA match would have been fun to see. England-Canada was another one that the team that appeared to be the better team came out on the losing end.
I can't say much about the referees, since I don't know the rules all that well.
