I'm in a similar situation here. I had to chance it and mail order my stuff in. Luckily I've liked the everything I've ordered online and it's was I'm happily using. Everyone I've ordered stuff from has allowed me the chance to gig test their gear. My wallet has had some bumps and bruises along the way, but that's been with the gear I've bought locally. I've ended up ebaying that stuff off and I've taken some losses. But in the end I have an amp I'm really happy with. (Now if my kids stay away from it! :eyebrow: ;) )

I'll humbly suggest one piece of gear I use:

A Read Purity preamp. I play in 3 bands at this time. I'm playing anythng from country ballads, funk, r&b, heavy rock, classic rock, even a little jazzy stuff. IMHO the Purity can handle any of these styles.

I use 2 Bergantino cabs, a 2-10" and a 1-15"; you're looking for a standalone cab. My personal choice would be a Bergantino HT-322. The Schroeder Big Boxes look interesting too.

Then add a power amp. Crown, Crest, Stewart, QSC, etc will all do a wonderful job.

Mail ordering may be your only option short of traveling somewhere to hear the stuff for yourself- which will also cost you time and money. Even then, you won't be able to gig test the gear out, which to me is the real test.

I have a brand new QSC PLX 3002 amp thats been sitting in a box for over a year, I think I will bust it out and find a pre-amp for it. That would be much lighter than the dreaded SVT 4, don't be suprised to see it in the for sale forums. :smug:

I don't have the time to build them myself, however I am open to haveing someone build me one, but I am not there yet.

I have a qestion peoples, I am interested in the Schroeder cab that has the 3x10, 2x12 config, the whole philosphy behind that cab is to use it as a standalone. But how much does it weigh? I cant find that info, also does anyone here have one?, what do you think of it?

Sorry but there is no one answer. For me, the ultimate rig is what I have now. It does everything I need it to do. It probably wouldn't be your ultimate rig. You have to find that for yourself.

I know that's not the answer you wanted, but it is the correct one.

That would be one potential solution, and a good one at that. I gigged with a Navigator into a PLX 3002 feeding a variety of cabs (I generally prefer to use two or more cabs, instead of one).

If I had to say just one head and one cab, which is tonally flexible and loud enough to carry any gig, and I had to stay within your budget, I would probably say an iAMP 800 into an El Whappo.

But, especially since you have the PLX 3002 already, I'd look to a killer preamp (Aguilar DB 659 or 680, Alembic F-1X, Demeter 201s, Read Purity, Navigator, etc.) and your cab of choice. In the "one cab only" camp, I'd look to the El Whappo, Whappo Jr., Schroeder 21012/410/310212, Bergantino NV215/NV425/NV610 or HT310, EA CX-310 or NM-410, Epifani T-310UL, T-410UL, or T-212UL, or an older Mesa Boogie Diesel or Road Ready 2x15 (with EV's).

If you are willing to lug two cabs, then two EA VL-210B's are hard to beat, and the Bergantino HT210/HT115 combo is pretty awesome. Two ACME Low B-2's (or B-4's) would put out stupid amounts of low end. Another great rig I used employed two Epi T-112's and two Epi T-110UL's.

The Walter Woods heads are pretty darn awesome, and my 1,200 watt Ultra would be on my recommended list, except that they run over $2,000 on their own. The iAMP 800 is about half the price, but definitely in the same league, which is impressive. If you look at the tube head market, the Boogie 400+ is a perrenial favorite, and I have been really impressed with the Eden VT-300A that I just picked up. My Aguilar DB 359 has tone for days, and is really flexible, but at only 200 watts, there are gigs where I would need more volume. The Trace Elliot V8 is very highly regarded, but you'd have to fight me if one becomes available! :p

If you are really into tubes, and want a very flexible sounding rig that could handle about anything, the Aguilar DB 680/728 setup is farkin' awesome!

You have lots of options. Luckily, you have lots of money!

I replaced my full BXT stack with one 3101212, and I run it at about 2/3 the volume I used to. And I've only got a plx1602. A 2402 would be a bit better suited for it.

It's also lighter than either one of the ampegs alone, at about 105lbs. Put it on some casters or a dolly and it's easily moved around.

One cab, one small rack.

If you have the money to buy a $3K rig or so, it might behoove you to fly out to Bass Central in Florida (Orlando), or perhaps Bass Northwest (in Seattle, I think), whichever flight/trip is cheaper. They both cater to bassists exclusively, have tons of stuff for you to try out, and if you like it, you can order it or buy it on the spot and work out a deal to have it shipped. Might be worth the $200 or so on a super-saver type airline ticket and 1-2 nights in a hotel room in the long run.

My votes for a $2600 rig that's lighter than your SVT/BXT set up that does it all? Get an Alembic F1-X, SF-2, a Power Amp, and the cabinet of your choice. You can probably get the F-1X, the SF-2 for about $1200, a power amp for about $600 (used maybe?), and the rest on a cab (there are so many choices I won't bother to suggest one). I do know that a lot of folks swear by the Alembic preamps and the SF-2. I personally own an SF-2, and I gotta tell ya, it will make any rig sound better, and it is the ultimate tone shaper.

I think I'll start out with replacing one cab and then go from there. I am thinking of ordering the Schroeder 310 212 cab, his whole philosophy behind that cab is exactly what I am looking for ( standalone cab) . I have two Ampeg bxt 4x10 cabs, I will get rid of one of them, and keep the other for home use. As for a head I have some SWR and Ampeg heads that I will start off with, If I cant find my tone then I will buy a nice pre-amp to go with my QSC power amp.

how's my rig for ultimate NO Frills - all tone - and it's still pretty damn light.

P-bass, j-bass to Avalon U5 to QSC PLX1602 (it will arrive soon - thanks Poon!). That's it right now.

I'm just looking for the right cab. But the way I have the rig working is that it will sound differently with different types of cabs.
And for Old school tube tone. How about an ultra low power tube amp (single-ended 6550) through the U5 speaker input (if I can get the thing to work right) - into the PLX. TaDa! John entwistle on tap!

Hmmm....
