How do you like the look of these ultra modern basses?

good value Ibanez, spendy Dingwall, or custom for not too much with Kiesel:

But my real question is, what sort of music would one play on these?

I’ve read that the Ibanez yields some pretty traditional tones and is super versatile. The Dingwalls I’ve heard (never even seen one in person) are lovely sounding and can cover a really wide range of tones as well. I prefer traditional looks but that Ibanez is smokin’ hot, and Dingwalls make me feel like when I used to climb the rope in gym class.

I would use them to play gregorian chant, or the theme song to “Renegade” starring Lorenzo Lamas.

I did not play that Ibanez, but came pretty close to buying one.
The others are top tier instruments, capable of catching a wide variety of tones.

That just leaves the point of 'do you (or others in the band) feel the need of a FSO filling the place of the bass guitar on stage'.

I was expecting Djent or way out Jazz videos…..

Really like the fanned fret (multi scale) concept, as when I’ve tried a fiver in the store, the B seems clunky and in need of more length.

The wide range of musical styles that are played on Dingwall basses is testament that they are capable of far more than the "Djent" pigeon hole they seem to have been placed in.
I have a D-roc 5 string arriving soon and it shall be playing in my current covers band ( pop punk, classic rock & alternative rock ).

i think these "ultra-modern" looks are great! but i'm so old that a red bass is 'stepping out' for me!

You can play any music on any bass. And the market has Fender (FSO) pretty well covered. I'd say if a bassist wants to stand apart a non FSO is a good place to start. Don't read too much into the body design of a guitar.

And reason I replied to this post is to say a mask with a mouth hole is the funniest thing I've seen this year.

Leland Sklar has done well on a Dingwall....

I use my Dingwalls for rock and metal because they're great with that, but I've played country and pop stuff with them no sweat. Super versatile instruments.

I'm sure those are fine basses- but the looks are just too far off the rails for my tastes to ever consider one. I love modern basses and the innovations that come with them, but these just cross the line for me.

For value: Ibanez. For value with some customization: Kiesel. For the best possible product even if it costs a few more loonies (how we refer to our Canadian dollar coins): Dinger!

I know Dingwall players who have played every genre from hardcore or metal to blues, rock, reggae and one has even been seen on stage playing country at the hallowed ground of Ryman Auditorium.

The real answer is they work anywhere someone needs a bass guitar.

I have an Ibanez EHB1505MS. I like it. I don't see why one couldn't play whatever kind of music they wanted on any of the basses shown in this thread.

I love them. Nearly ordered a Keisel Vader 6 headless when I snaffled one of the 2 Ibanez BTB846vs in the country.

Whatever you want. Our cover/party/wedding band played a huge variety of music, often 3 nights a week for over a decade, and I had only one bass; a Steinberger XL2. Covered everything well.

That just leaves the point of 'do you (or others in the band) feel the need of a FSO filling the place of the bass guitar on stage'.

Not in any band I'll ever be a member of again. If they wanted something traditional looking, I'd use the T40, but that's it.

My current main Axe crosses a few lines of traditional bass building as well.
It hugs to my belly and presents the neck in the most comfortable way imaginable, while pushing the scale no further down than 8,25lbs. In essence, it's very close to a six string Jazz, but so much more comfy to wear and play. The traditional FSO has had to fulfill several aspects when it was conceived - one of them being 'easy and cheap mass production'. The way the body on a Dingwall (or on my Le Fay) is shaped takes a lot more time and effort (which entails production cost) but these companies don't sacrifice ergonomics for price - or at least they put the bar a lot higher.

None of those strike me as ultra-modern. They’re remixes of design elements that have been around since at least the 1980s. (Not a complaint.)

Played a Dingwall Afterburner at a guitar show in Montreal a few years back and was surprised how easy it was to play. The sound was fantastic, the low B phenomenal. Sheldon himself was in the booth and we had a very nice chat.

I almost got a passive AB used a few months later, but the seller changed his mind. Sadly the prices have gone up to make one unaffordable for me.
