Underappreciated Bassists in famous bands

How about Tim Bogert of Vanilla Fudge. He was insane on "Shotgun". Mel Schacher of Grand Funk.

These two were exactly who I thought of when I saw this thread, along with Peter Cetera, mentioned earlier.

I think maybe Verdine White could make this list (when he actually played). ;)

I just had to learn the song Makin Me Look Good Again, and was blown away by this guy I never heard of before, Philip Pence.

This is some super tasteful playing, IMO:

I'll add that I'm a little put off by everybody turning "country" these days, but these people are bringing back what I used to love about music. This is the kind of music that was popular when I fell in love with music, and bass.

Tye Zamora of Alien ant Farm.
Dirk Lance - early Incubus.

We appreciated them quite well in the breakout periods of those bands. Their bass virtuosity did not go unnoticed back then. At least not in my circle of their contemporaries. But you may be right in the post dirk slap free hugeness of incubus' career, by the time they got huge, dirk was gone. Alien ant farm got a raw deal in the crap shoot that is the record industry and went into cult status obscurity, only remembered now for an MJ cover, which was well executed, and those high vocal parts were from non other than Tye.

But I'm sure you are right about the mainstream meatheads not bothering to know the name of the bass players.

In the end both were pretty much replaced by guitar players, but excellent musicians nonetheless. I have not seen either of them live since dirk and tye though. I can't see Ben Kenney pulling off the science stuff, but who knows. I welcomed the change because the combination of Ben and Mike at the time of the shift from funk nu metal into their more progressive sound, reminded me of 90s-y2k rush.
