I don't think Sting is underrated as a bass player at all. He gets plenty of respect from bassists.

Around here we all pretty much know he's a fantastic bassist. If you are unfamiliar check out his early bass work with The Police. I much prefer his raw style of playing back then, even though he went on to write much more sophisticated songs.

Always loved Sting,as a composer,singer...and bass player! His basslines always fit perfectly the songs,and sometimes are a “song in the song “ (walking on the moon).

I recall seeing The Police in about 1979 at a relatively small theater in downtown Miami somewhere near the old basketball arena.
Their big hit at the time was "Roxanne."

It might have been T the Guzman Cultural center but time (and other things) causes it to escape me.

Also, as to underrated pop bassists from that period, I propose John Taylor of Duran Duran.

Yeah, Squeeze is a very overlooked pop band and they always had great bassists.

Graham Maby (Joe Jackson Band). I’ve always been impressed by a bassist that can write compelling bass lines with an accomplished pianist. Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello). John Bentley (Squeeze) as well.

You should check out their new album; After Laughter.

Justin Meldal-Johnsen (who has his own sub-forum here in the "Ask a Pro" section) produced and played bass on the whole album. Great bass work all over the album.
