Unofficial weight loss thread

theres no need to watch what you eat AT ALL, as long as you are active.

fat people have only themselves to blame for being lazy.

it really is only exercise that you need
Most nutritionists and health experts will tell you that maintaining a healthy weight is 80% about diet and 20% about exercise.

Tomorrow; ropeskipping between every set of lifting! Should be killing!

Honey, you are fixing to be *ripped*! :)

Maybe we should have a TB calendar with all our ripped-n-buff weight-loss stars? ;)

Today will make the 3rd circuit training session this week. If I can get up and get there before they close at 1 p.m. tomorrow, I can make a 4th time. I have a gig tonight, and won't get home 'til 3 a.m. or so, so...we'll see.

Breakfast = cinnamon bread and a blackberry yogurt.

Lunch = lean turkey with mayo and red-leaf lettuce and home-grown tomatoes on honey-wheat, with a mozzarella string cheese stick, and raw baby carrots with low-fat ranch dressing.

Supper = Pizza, at the gig. But I'll only have two pieces. Its too hot to eat more than that, anyway.

Cherie :)

So, back to the top for this...

Now that I'm not playing football anymore, I could use being skinnier. At 5'11" and 197 pounds, I'm not exactly big by lineman standards (AT ALL.) but theres definitely some weight that I could use losing.

I'd like to drop to about 165. Maybe a little unreasonable? We'll see by the time I get to 175. But jeez... I was a skinny little kid around kindergarten... gained weight through the years, started getting taller and slimmed out a little bit, but its time to get to where I want to be.

So I started working out again. I had been doing some extensive weight lifting with football, but I'm modifying that a bit. Arms and chest are more important to me (All important looks factor!), plus my legs and butt are too big anyways (a lot of its muscle's fault!) I guess thats what happens when squat is my only good lift :p

I've been doing about 100-175 situps a day now, I think I'm gonna do that about 5 days a week, upper body weights every other day, and I've been doing some exercise bike stuff. Cardiovascular and all, itll help me for when I start running soon. I want to start running, just not yet, until I get my lungs and stuff in a little better shape. Where I live is too hilly to run and be outta shape.

Also, I cut out pretty much all sweets and pop (Coke zero is my friend.) And I'm trying to cut some calories. We'll see how it goes.

Down 30lbs and about 6% of my body fat gone after about 4 months now.

I am currently doing 2.5 miles running, 3x a week, and 20 minutes of strength training a day on my off days from running.

Im also still sticking to South Beach just fine. I cheat occasionally, but always go right back to normal. It really is a way of life, not a "diet" per say.

Good luck to those just starting out, you can do it! And keep it up for those on the right path for themselves, you can keep doing it! :D

BTW Cherie, do you see what I mean about if you skip going even one day, you start going down the wrong path? hehehe

So far Ive managed to not skip any days, other than a brief back injury, and that only made me skip 1 workout. I cant stress enough the importance of at least getting out there and doing SOMETHING during your workout time you scheduled. I may not always go out and run as far or as long as I should, but I always get out there and do what I can. Id rather get up and get out there and only run 10 minutes, than skip it altogether.

I think its made all the difference in keeping me doing this for myself. Ive never stuck to any workout routine this long in my whole life, because I always make one excuse. Then it becomes easier and easier to justify skipping out. Before you know it, Im back to zero. So even if you dont give it your all everyday, give it at least a little :)

Well... seems I need to jump on-board. In the past, I've been a rather outspoke member against obesity. 9 months ago, I was sucked into a couple of big projects here at work, so my work out time went away. Then, just as that project work wound down... I dropped a cab on my big toe, making it so I couldnt run. It healed & I started making excuses.

Here I am, needing to loose 20 pounds. I've already started back working out, & it feels good.

Totally! I really feel just gross if I don't get up and move every day. If I don't do the gym, then I go work in the garden. I have a big compost heap...it takes forever to turn it all, and I can get two days' worth of exercise just doing that. Then there's digging new beds, weeding, potting up, etc.

Today is a gym day. Afterward, I'm going to take my daughter for a walk in the creek. Since we had a little rain, it will be pretty down there, and pleasant to go walking together.

I lost 3.5" overall in August! 1" from my waist, 1/2" from my lower abs, 1" from my thighs, 1/2" from my arms, and 1/2" from my bust. I want to repeat that performance, or top it, in September.

Cherie :-)

My Stetson's off to you, doing all that running in the heat we've had until very recently. I've been keeping to the gym. When I do my yard work, I get out and do it in the evening, so I don't fall out from the heat. Still...its a good, hard sweat!

I'm not doing South Beach...my family would mutiny. But I'm eating healthy foods, very little junk, and *no* soda. I also make sure that, no matter what else I eat, I include some fresh fruit and some salad/raw veggies in the meal. I find that it fills me up so I won't eat as much of everything else.

Rock on!

Been through the same thing. Because of various injuries, and my old workplace where you worked OT all the time, and got fed rich food daily, I slacked off. Now, I'm having to play catchup. I'm just happy that I *get* to, you know?

Rock on!

Be sure that you keep your health in mind when doing this. While losing weight is often a good thing, you don't want to go too far. Check your current BMI to see approx. how much room you have to work with. Of course, if you've already done this, don't mind me. :)

No worries, hon. I am working with my gym trainer. Every month, she weighs me, measures me, and checks my BMI. Right now, I'm about 30% above what I should be. I have a smallish frame.

And, I promise, I'm not starving myself. Actually, I'm probably still eating too much. (Hard not to eat barbeque or ice cream when everyone else in the house is having some.;) )

I actually gained two pounds. I lost those inches from exercising and toning up. The weight gain is from muscle.

I think, if I cut back on sugars and up my exercise intensity just a little bit, I can safely lose two or three more inches this month. I have to be careful, though, like you say. My right shoulder got strained back in March, and if I work it too hard, too often, it hurts. Have to pay attention to those pains and minimize the risk.

I'm looking forward to a hike in the creek this afternoon, before the gym. It has been so ugly and hot and dry recently, we haven't been down there in a couple of months. Now that its cooler and we've had a bit of rain, it will be a beautiful hike. :)

Oh, when it was hotter, I was getting up and running at 6am, to avoid that heat hehe. Now that its nicer out, I will likely go back to evenings after work, and run more often hehe.

Ah, you are one of those brave, early-morning souls! At 6 a.m., I am getting kids out of bed and off to school. I'm sure you're looking forward to those lovely, cool fall evenings. Beautiful time for running!

Good Work!!! I would suggest, however, making strength training your focus, and running a suppliment, rather than the other way around, as it appears from your description. Lifting can have a greater effect on fat loss than almost any cardio-type exercise. It keeps your metabolism stoked for up to 48 hours after your workout, whereas most cardio only keeps you revved up for an hour or two. So an hour of cardio will burn more calories than an hour of weightlifting during that hour, but weightlifting burns more calories over time.

Not to mention, when you have more muscle, your resting metabolic rate is higher, meaning you burn more calories just sitting there. And weight training will make you better at any physical activity you decide to do. Running will just make you better at running.

...So anyways, I just realized I never posted in this thread before. Well, I've been actually keeping to a workout routine (as opposed to working out 3 or 4 times a month if I was lucky) for the last month and a half, and I've made some great progress. I'm definitely much stronger than I was. I haven't lost a single pound of weight since I started, but I can see a significant difference in the mirror. The gut is a lot smaller, and the chest, shoulders, arms, and legs are all a little bigger.

Diet-wise, I keep it to roughly 1/3 protein, 1/3 carbs, 1/3 fats, trying to get plenty of fruit, veggies, and fiber. I pretty much never drink regular sodas and rarely drink diet, I don't drink alcohol during the week, and I go for the high fiber/whole wheat versions of bread, tortillas, and pasta.

My current workout is 3 days a week in the gym, lifting for about an hour. 3 hours out of my week, plus watching what I eat, and I've seen great results.

Well part of the issue for me is money and equipment. I dont own any weights, and Im not a member of a gym. So my Strength Workouts consist of pushups, crunches, deep knee bends, dips, that kind of stuff. While it would be nice to focus more on strength, to do more, I need more. I already have running shoes, socks, shorts ect, and my gym is my neighborhood hehe.

Not to mention, I dont find my strength workouts, or using weights or machines, as easy to stay consistant with. I dont enjoy those workouts as much as my runs, which makes it harder to focus on. At least with the running, Ive locked in a schedule that I always stick to, and its not that difficult to stay motivated.

yeah, it's definitely better to do something rather than nothing. And you've had great results so far.

no weights required, and should definitely help you get stronger and leaner and more muscular. It sounds like you're already doing some of the exercises there; now you can add a few more.

Keep up the good work, and I'll do the same! :bassist:

Dude, that's cool stuff! I bookmarked that site. I don't have room at home for weights, beyond small hand weights. When I can't get to the gym, and its too hot to go hiking, it'd be cool to have something I can do at home, that doesn't use a lot of space. Nice post!
