I don’t know and I doubt it as I have never heard the claim before.

But I found the Sydney 2SM chart for 17 April 1964 and they mention that it entered the top 100 that week at no. 76 and no. 446 overall for 1964.
Can’t find anything more at the moment.

In February 2015, Don McLean announced he would reveal the meaning of the lyrics to the song "American Pie" when the original manuscript went for auction in New York City, in April 2015. The lyrics and notes were auctioned on April 7, and sold for $1.2 million. In the sale catalogue notes, McLean revealed the meaning in the song's lyrics: "Basically in 'American Pie' things are heading in the wrong direction. ... It [life] is becoming less idyllic. I don't know whether you consider that wrong or right but it is a morality song in a sense."

Chrissie Hynde and James Honeyman-Scott wrote the first Pretenders hit "Brass in Pocket". The song's title came about after The Pretenders first-ever UK gig, when they were in the communal dressing room with The Strangeways, whom they were supporting. Chrissie Hynde wanted to know whose trousers were sprawled over the back of a chair. One of The Strangeways, Ada Wilson, said: "I'll have them if there's any brass (i.e: money) in the pockets."

Neil Young is a polio surviver and to this day, one side of his body has decreased motor skills which affects his guitar playing.

Neil also is a lover and collector of Lionel Trains.

Keith Moon and Mama Cass...........On September 7, 1978, Keith Moon of The Who died in this London apartment that the drummer had rented from Harry Nilsson. Cass Elliot of the Mamas & the Papas had also died in the same apartment four years earlier on July 29, 1974 and Nilsson believed it was cursed.

Buzzcocks manager Richard Boon and frontman Peter Shelley suggested the name Stiff Kittens for this nascent band came to be known as _________, then _____________ and finally_____________ after their frontman committed suicide, allegedly while listening to The Idiot by Iggy Pop.

And he played that piano glissando on T-Rex Get It On cos he bumped into Marc Bolan and mentioned he was broke and needed £8 to pay his rent. So, Bolan hired him for the session for £9 even though there was no piano part.

I saw a video of T Rex performing "Get It On" -- not sure if it was one of those promotional videos bands used to make before MTV, or a television performance (quite possibly lip-syncing) -- and I'd swear Elton John was the piano player!

The Jethro Tull song "Aqualung" idea came about from a photograph that Ian Anderson's wife at the time, Jennie (Franks) Anderson, took of a tramp in London. She wrote many of the lyrics for the song. Ian Anderson, has said, "She, in fact, was responsible for the lyrics in the first couple of verses. I suppose in total probably about half of the lyrics were words or word associations that she had come up with based on pictures of homeless men Franks had taken as a photography student." She is credited was co-writer of the song.

The Aqualung character is also mentioned in "Cross-Eyed Mary", the next song on the Aqualung album in this verse.

Laughing in the playground, gets no kicks from little boys:
Would rather make it with a letching grey
Or maybe her attention is drawn by Aqualung
Who watches through the railings as they play

Ian was a well traveled player. In amongst all of this, he was one of the founding members of King Crimson. (Court of the Crimson King)
