Melcher was no ‘ally’ of Manson’s; he met Manson through the Beach Boys’ Dennis Wilson(who was the first of the Hollywood rock scene to get conned by Charlie). Manson was just another would-be singer/songwriter, out for a hustle(all the while assembling his cult family). Wilson picked him up hitchhiking, and that was his foot in the door, actually letting Manson and some of his girls move in. Melcher thought about doing a film on the ‘family’, and did some preliminary demos with Manson, but decided to pass due to the non-commerciality of the material, and some behavioral red flags. Melcher at the time was dating Candice Bergen and sharing a house with her and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders, another band Melcher produced. The three soon moved out of the place, which was then taken over by Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. Both Melcher and Wilson soon distanced themselves from Manson, setting him off, and it’s been speculated that the eventual attack on the house, regardless of the then-current residents, was a result of Charlie’s madness.
