That glorious hair didn’t make itself, people! It took hours of painstaking hair engineering to create that unnatural helmet of hair. Plenty of chemicals, hair straightening techniques and, most importantly, a professional-grade rigid hooded hair dryer. …

I once heard a story about the VanHalen rider. (I have no idea if it's true or not.)

They weren't snooty horn dogs who needed lube and thought they deserved brown-free M&M's. Those ridiculous items were there simply to see if the venue had read the rider and paid attention to detail. They were, in essence, a "test". If they walked in and saw a bowl of M&M's with no brown, they knew that every other detail was likely being taken care of (including production matters).

Not sure how old you are but I was 12 in 74, 13 in 75 so just starting to really take notice of my own music as opposed to my parents music when AC/DC were starting out. And in Sydney living 2 suburbs over from where the Young’s lived and had friends that went to the same school as them (obviously too young to know them) - so as they started getting publicity (most about Angus’s age which was understated for publicity) it was obvious they were locals. Which is strangely appealing.

I lived down the road from the Hobbit Hole — Ryde's youth centre, where they liked to play, early on. Never got the chance to be there to see them — the old folks were way too strict. And I was never a big fan. Two of their songs were on our set-list, not my choice (because they were dead easy ) And my best friend, Desert Head, was a huge fan so I copped a lot of it. Not that you could avoid Akka Dakka anyway.

The first true radio hit recorded at Caribou Ranch, Colorado, was Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way." In addition to Chicago (starting with Chicago VI), the studio has been used by numerous other artists: Elton John (for his Caribou album as well as Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and Rock of the Westies), Dan Fogelberg, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Carole King, Stephen Stills, Waylon Jennings, Amy Grant, Supertramp, Badfinger and The Beach Boys. Unfortunately, the studio complex was shut down and never used again after a March 1985 fire destroyed the control room and caused about $3 million in damage.
James William Guercio, an American music producer, musician and songwriter, built the recording studio in the early 1970s.

Roy Orbison‘s son Alex acquired the movie rights to The Beatle Who Vanished, a book about Jimmie Nicol, the drummer who briefly filled in for a tonsillitis-ridden Ringo Starr during the Beatles‘ 1964 tour.



The day before the Beatles were scheduled to embark on a world tour in June 1964, Starr was hospitalized with tonsilitis and pharyngitis. Unable to postpone the trek, the Beatles hired 24-year-old Jimmy Nicol to fill in for Starr. Nicol previously drummed on a cash-grab Beatles covers album and thus already knew their songs.

During the Beatles tour, Lennon and McCartney would often ask Nicol how he was coping, and he would reply, "It's getting better."
It was this memory that inspired the song Getting Better on the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

Nicol himself expressed his disillusionment several years later: "Standing in for Ringo was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Until then I was quite happy earning £30 or £40 a week. After the headlines died, I began dying too.

Dang now I’m glad I turned down the Beatles offer to play bass for them when “Paul was dead”…Ha!

Many of those early Beatles concerts would be no more than 40 or 45 minutes--a stark contrast to their Hamburg days when they would play 6 and 7 hours at a stretch with an occasional break.

When I was 5 or 6 years old my parents owned one real Beatles album, and one fake Beatles album. The latter was presumably one of these "cash-grab covers albums" though at the time I just thought it was really strange...who are these guys that arent the Beatles playing Beatles songs!?!?!

I doubt this was the one Jimmy Nicol played on, but this post prompted me just now to think about it for the first time in 50+ years. I was surprised how easy it was to find on the internet!

Dude ... there's an entire very long thread here on TB on that Quincy Jones business. Suffice it to say, even Q himself disavowed those comments, and countless musicians, bassists, drummers, etc. have weighed in praising the abilities of Paul, Ringo, etc. So, nah.
