Talking about the old band The Nices guitarist, Davy O'List a cantankerous and grumpy guitarist in the young days, seemed to always be the one who "missed out" on big scheme of things. Just "missed" it. Partly due to his own adamant "views" of things.
He subbed for Syd Barret in Pink Floyd, offered, but said no thanks, subbed for Mick Abrahams in Jethro Tull, but said no thanks, and botched himself out of Roxy Music just prior they got signed and started to work on their first album.

Tony Iommi ascribes the success of Black Sabbath in part to his brief (about three week) spell in Jethro Tull as it taught him that Sabbath needed a work ethic to be able to become successful, and Tull famously started rehearsal's at 9 am sharp.
Continuing on the Tull theme for a moment, Jimmy Page was in the control room during the recording of the guitar solo for Aqualung. Barry Barlow was considered as a replacement for John Bonham in Led Zepplin (and worked with Plant) as he was a rock drummer Bonham rated above others.
John Mayall's famous 9-string guitar was really horrible to play and badly set up. (From my bass playing uncle who knew Mayall back in the 1960s on the blues circuit and was on the same bill and decided he wanted to do a number of guitar so borrowed said guitar and absolutely regretted it and never borrowed it again).
"Surfin' Bird" by The Trashmen is actually a combination of two R&B hits by The Rivingtons: "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word".
Led Zeppelin ripped off...I mean borrowed....a lot of their songs from earlier songs...and did not give due credit.

I used to work in Kidderminster town centre (UK). My office overlooked the back of the town hall, where Judas Priest would (allegedly) sometimes rehearse. I could hear there was a band, but never well enough to know it was them.
That was Clive Bunker on the Aqualung album; their original drummer, it was also his last with them. He didn’t want to do the subsequent tour. He dropped out of music business for a while, but eventually played with Gong guitarist Steve Hillage.

The song "Train, Train" by Blackfoot on their album Strikes was written by guitarist and vocalist Rickey Medlocke's grandfather, Paul "Shorty" Medlocke, who also played harmonica on the track. For the follow-up album Tomcattin', Shorty co-wrote the song "Fox Chase" and gave the song a short introduction. For Marauder, Shorty co-wrote "Rattlesnake Rock 'n' Roller" and played banjo on the track. Shorty had also appeared on Blackfoot's 1975 debut album, No Reservations, singing on a version of "Railroad Man" (which he also wrote). Shorty passed away on August 6, 1982.
I love Blackfoot. As a harmonica player, I always loved Shorty's intro on Train, Train.
Also, Ricky has been a full time member of Lynyrd Skynyrd as a guitarist since 1996. Ricky was a session drummer and played on early Skynyrd before moving on to Blackfoot. Ricky played drums and sang backing vocals on "One More Time" from Street Survivors.

Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention played in bands with both Robert Plant and the father of the Campbell brothers of UB40, as well as Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull. Who knows, if John Paul Jones has been in 'The Shadows II', maybe Pegg would have been in Led Zepplin.
