Okay, that earns a cymbal crash! A fine sense of humor-- I appreciated your avatar from the first time I saw it. Very cool!
...but I really do like your idea of giving ratings along those other dimensions. I think you are right that it gets the point across rather efficiently.
Since this thread seems to have settled a bit
I feel it's safe to post that I received my new bass
yesterday which was ordered June 30th,2007.
It's a (USA) Upton hybrid 5-string with a high-C and
is left-handed. Quite a special config.
I've been reading all of the posts here at TB
and am glad to see some openness for opinion.
We all should be able to state our opinions
in order to get feedback from others that may
help us see and possibly learn from the perspective
of others.
So far I love my new bass and have been getting
a better feel for it quickly. I'll add some more comments
soon. It's too new at this point to make any
rational judgment with un-bias positive critique.
So far so good!

From David Gage. They sometimes list them on their site. Sometimes not. Best bet is to call their shop and ask for Ruth Conroy.
I'm looking forward to hearing more about your new bass, the first USA Upton I have heard of that's in the hands of its new owner. Pictures would be cool. Are you going to be gigging with it anytime soon? I'd love to hear it. I'm in Minnetonka, let's hook up.

Sounds like a cool bass! Lefty with a high C is most likely not sitting in the bass section of an orchestra.

I was just thinking about a high-C lefty 5 string for myself. I would imagine it makes for easier playing of the higher notes.
I just got home for a local music shop. I went there
to play other basses for comparison to my UB.
I am new to the double bass; however, I have played
lots of different styles of music for many years. You
may think I don't understand classical music but let me
say that I've spent the last twenty years doing
full-score orchestral pieces using MIDI and Computers.
Studying alot about terminology, theory and
the use of digital technology has allowed me widened
my knowledge and abilities in all forms of music.
I'm presently playing and recording bop/post bop.
I'll try and upload a link to some of my work soon.
When the sun comes out I'll take a few picture of my
new bass.
Well! What about the UB hi-5?
The hi-5 was the greatest choice for me.
I think I have read these are called "C-basses"
because the 1st string is middle C on a piano.
I'll get my thoughts together and give some
impression as to how I feel this bass stands
next to the variety I played earlier today at
the music shop.
For now let me say the UB-hybrid hi-5 is what
you should expect for the price.
At the store today I played a half a dozen basses
ranging in price from $2000-$7500 with
and without bows for about 2 hrs.
I was really there at this point to try bows
and string sets. I also talked with an instructor
about training. He is presently studying composition
at the U of MN.
I can't tell you how happy I am with the high C.
The higher note range is very very useful.
Playing fast two and three octave scales
is fantastically easy and fun.
It seems to play fast flamenco type scales
very good. I love it.
The bass is presently fitted with
Obligato E,A,D,G and uses a
Pirastro Flexocore High C Solo String (1st string).
This combination was suggested at the time of
purchase.
As I stated earlier I am new to the
DB and have a lot to learn especially with arco.
Being left-handed the double bass
was not practical until now.
No! I wouldn't settle for a right-handed
bass held either way. I did that with EB's.
This new setup really works for me.
So what's MHO about the "bang for buck"?
The Upton Hybrid 5-string is "very good".
Better than average In it's class. Great setup.

I have a hybrid on order, which I'm sure will be a fine instrument, made by hardworking people, with a passion for bass. And I eagerly await it's arrival, but at this point I am frustrated.
My only real problem with Upton to date, which is kind of a big one, my bass was SUPPOSED to be done 2 weeks ago (that being the 12 week mark, even though when I ordered they said it would likely be 10 weeks...), and I just got an update on my bass, and they pretty much haven't even started building it. You can probably imagine my frustration by this point. I hate waiting, and I think it was dishonest of them to qoute me that time. Am I to believe they did not know they'd be in the middle of a transition period? I understand that's why it's taking longer, but I think it's very dishonest to not inform your customers. I'm positive Im not the only one in this boat, and I think we should recieve some kind of compensation...
As I stated before, I eagerly await my bass, and I do have confidence that they will do a good job on it, but by this point my confidence in them has gone down, I have to be completely honest.

When I bought my Upton bass I had some communication issues with the folks there. No doubt any business will have a few things here and there not work out right. I had to sell the bass and move on. Most people seem to have very positive interactions with Upton and Co. but no business is perfect. I don't know what is going on now there but my guess is that the building process needs to have the kinks worked out.
The real $64,000 question is: how will the new basses sound? And will they be able to hold their pricepoints?

might i suggest that you simply talk with them about the situation? it does sound like they are have production issues, which certainly shouldn't be made the customer's problem ... but, nobody wants to rush the craft. i'm a big believer in under-promising and over-delivering, and certainly my upton fits that formula, but ... i feel your pain.
