I've got some questions for you military folk, cause I've considered joining in the past (and still may join someday).
1. How often are you home during any given year?
2. How hard is it maintaining personal relationships (spouses, children, etc.) ? I'm not sure if I could stand being away from loved ones for too long at a time.
3. Is balancing a military/civilian life a hard thing to do? I've heard stories of people being in the military so long they have no idea how to adjust back to a civilian lifestyle.
1) Depends on what branch and the world circumstances and your job. In Peace time, Navy goes out 6 mos at a time, unless something happens while they are out.
Air Force goes TDY usually 30 days at a time a couple times a year if your in a combat unit. Airlift you come and go all the time. Bombers usually fly out of their own base but do long missions.
Army, Air Force, Marines and land based Sailors can go overseas 1 to 1 1/2 years at a time if your single. If you take your family they make you stay longer to make up for moving everyone. 2 yrs +.
2) It takes a special person to be a Military spouse. Mine couldn't handle it, that's why I didn't stay in.
3) SOME people who retire after 30 yrs can't leave it behind and carry it with them. Some you wouldn't know unless they told you.
I don't know how it is now, because people are generally healthier, but it used to be a very short life span for retired military. I blame it on drinking, Smoking and Stress. The drinking and smoking aren't as bad as it used to be.
Now in War Time, all bets are off. You go and do what is needed when it's needed. When I signed up, if war broke out, I was in for the duration, even if it was the day before I got out. We were facing the Soviets then and to be honest, from what we were pointing at each other, it wasn't going to last long. Rumor had it, both sides had enough supplies to fight all out for 10 days and it would go nuclear before that.
