Starting this to see what people think would be useful. I bet some of the stuff peeps think would be cool to have already exists. I'll start with a switch to connect or disconnect a speaker in a cabinet.

If I had a 2 speaker box, where one speaker could be connected or disconnected with a switch, the box could be 8 ohms or 4 ohms and of course I'd be switching between using 1 or 2 speakers.

I'm thinking about it because it might be interesting to have a cab I can match with another cab or with my combo amp.

What would be useful for you?

This would be a good way to ruin the remaining speaker unless the drivers have separate air spaces.

IME, when something is not offered, there's usually a good reason.

Good to know. But it could still work if the speakers were built in their own compartments I suppose.

Regardless of how you connect it, you will always be transporting a 2-speaker cabinet.
It makes more sense to use two identical cabinets and transport only as many as you need.

Some companies have offered switches that change the impedance.

In order to achieve this I believe dual voice coil drivers are used.

To me, a useful gear idea would be like Legos, with components that quickly lock in place, and can be disconnected just as easily.

Possible applications might include:

Attaching lightweight amps to cab tops so they don't move while playing.

Connecting pedal board elements to a pedal board; bonus points if audio signals and power connections are provided in each "Lego."

Temporarily affixing something to a bass amp - like a tuner, effect, or pedal.

Quick-connect "Lego"-based pick-ups; snap and play.

The Hartke hydrive 12 is switchable between 8 and 4 ohms. Not terribly expensive either.

Only 1 speaker in it though. I think the way it works is the voice coil is tapped so you can either use half of it or the whole thing.

I might be wrong though.

The one piece of equipment that I have wanted for a long time, but probably doesn't exist, is a roadie.

Check it out. Six speakers, with a 3PDT switch. Let's say the speakers are 6 Ohms. With the switch in the "A" position, the overall impedance is (3/2)R = 9 Ohms. In the "B" position, (2/3)R = 4 Ohms. That's close enough to 8 and 4 for the marketing department.

I have no intention of building anything like this, and really it's just intended as an amusing math diversion.

Which got me looking at PJB cabs... I see they do a combo with 12 drivers... How many useful impedance values could you get out of a 12 x 5 cabinet with more switching on the same lines? Although TBH I am unconvinced that the majority of us need be concerned about varying impedance.

I gotta say, it's way nicer than tilt-and-roll- I just push/pull/spin wherever I want, and with the LARGE casters, weight (other than lifting of course) becomes a non-issue.

Locking wheels are available for those who don't live/play on flat surfaces

or have the means to secure things in the trailer.
