Useful gear ideas

But there is a soldering iron in my wifey's car! (and the best thing: it's hers => no problem! :D)

Just took some time to resolder the stuff I have in my amp case and bass case the last time we switched cars.

I also repaired a guitarists instrument cable (got me a free beer and a smoke :D)

To me, a useful gear idea would be like Legos, with components that quickly lock in place, and can be disconnected just as easily.

Possible applications might include:

Attaching lightweight amps to cab tops so they don't move while playing.

Connecting pedal board elements to a pedal board; bonus points if audio signals and power connections are provided in each "Lego."

Temporarily affixing something to a bass amp - like a tuner, effect, or pedal.

Quick-connect "Lego"-based pick-ups; snap and play.

I built a mod for a 4 X 12 guitar cabinet for a guy who was chasing guitar tone with his Marshall rig.
I used a Speakon NL8 in the cabinet with each driver wired directly to a pair of connections. The mating NL8 plugs were wired for the series parallel combinations to get , 4, 8 or 16 ohms depending on what plug you connected to the cabinet, the plug also had speaker cable to plug into the amp.
Choose the plug, set the amp impedance selector.

Don't know if he ever found the "sound" he was looking for!

I always wonder why the vast majority of pickup-equipped acoustic guitars have built-in electronic tuners but are completely absent on solid-body instruments.
I assume it's partly because the controls on acoustic guitars face the player, but on solid bodies face the audience.

Beyond that, it's probably because Fender/Gibson/Rickenbacker didn't do it in 1959, therefore merely considering it is an abomination and one must atone for ones thoughts.
 
Starting this to see what people think would be useful. I bet some of the stuff peeps think would be cool to have already exists. I'll start with a switch to connect or disconnect a speaker in a cabinet.

If I had a 2 speaker box, where one speaker could be connected or disconnected with a switch, the box could be 8 ohms or 4 ohms and of course I'd be switching between using 1 or 2 speakers.

I'm thinking about it because it might be interesting to have a cab I can match with another cab or with my combo amp.

What would be useful for you?
Not that ;). Put a second amp into the equation and I could get behind that, but I see no use whatsoever for what you're describing. If I have two cabs and only one amp, I want both of them on the whole time.

I would not find this to be a useful idea.

however, I once had a Peavey cabinet with two 10's and a single 18" speaker (1820). You could plug a head into either the tens or the 18 discreetly. Obviously you could plug into both as well. This was actually useful when bi-amping.

I always thought it would be cool to have an XLR instrument cable with the ability to provide phantom power to active electronics. No idea if this is feasible or not, guessing not, since as Aged Horse pointed out: if it doesn't exist there's probably a reason.

It's certainly possible, but the active electronics would need to share the same phantom power protocol as the input provides. It would not be usable for passive instruments because the input impedance would need to be pretty low. It would also not be backwards compatible to millions of existing instruments.

Did something like that - 6 pin XLR carrying the audio plus DC control voltages for functions in the rack. Found I only really used one function and that was easier to use as a pedal. Then the bass got stolen and all my rack toys were useless.

Alembic Series instruments do this, except what looks like an XLR is actually a 5-pin connector for a supplied cable that runs to a power supply (either the Blue Box or the current rack mount) that takes 120/220 and reduces it down to 18v to power the instrument. The cable sends power to the bass and returns signal to the box, with L,R, and mono outputs to send to an amp or preamp.

Headroom for days.

The catch is you're bound by that cable and the box, which is problematic for many.
