vail johnson

Say what you want about Mr. Vail's gigs, but it seems to me that in that thread we had a credible pro player with experience and some really great chops relating his strongly held opinion, and he was chased off by over-sensitive TB'ers because his opinion differed from theirs.

YMMV, IMHO, just my $.02 and all that stuff...

He actually posted under the name "vail_bass" - here's that thread :

I don't think he came across very well...? :hmm:

Vail Johnson is one of my favorite players, although I must say that my only reference is the live Kenny G video. It was enough for me, though. Vail plays (or used to play) Kubickis, which are basses that I like so much (one of the many reasons why the first Stu Hamm instructional video blew my mind) and many people seem to bash, mainly because of its looks. I've just read that thread in its entirety and still don't get why such a pro behaved that way. I mean, bearing in mind that a true professional isn't only the one with flawless playing who gets THE gigs, but definitely a down-to-earth person (as far as I've seen, Victor Wooten is the perfect example of a true pro to me, BTW). Maybe Mr. Johnson had a good intention, but the way he approached the forum was totally wrong IMO. I feel very disappointed. :scowl:

No heat here. I also have strongly held opinions (I'd like to have such great chops as well :( ) but I think that if at least he'd said something like "hello, I've noticed that many people... but I want to invite you to try... blah blah blah..." in his first TalkBass post ever, his advice would be taken in a better way (and I don't consider myself an over-sensitive person. It's just that to me, politeness definitely scores big points). :)
