Warmoth does whatever headstock you ask for, he's asking for his own. If he wnated he could ask for Fender's.

Warmoth has permission from Fender to sell their designs, Nino doesn't.

Considering the history of lawsuits between Fender and other companies copying their designs, I dont think anyone could plead ignorance.

I've already been politely warned by Warmoth about selling Valenti basses with Fender Headstocks on Talkbass. I still have the PM from 8/28/03 to remind myself:

Just wanted to drop you a line and say nice work on the couple of "Valenti" basses you put together! Your work makes us look good!

Also, if you're going to be assembling and selling a few of these, especially online, it might be a good idea to modify the headstock a bit. Selling a new complete instrument with a stock Fender peghead and your name on it is Fender Lawsuit time. All you need to do to play it safe is make the headstock 10% different from the Fender design, which might mean a little contour cut here or there. Not getting sued by Fender is job #1 around here, so we're especially conscious of this stuff.

Just wanted to give you a heads-up!

Keep up the good work, and send us some pictures for our customer gallery when you have the time! We'd love to show off your work.

The difference is that Fender told Warmoth that they can use the headstock design on their parts for sale.

Nino can build a bass with a Fender headstock, he just cant sell it for profit.

If I want to build a bass with a Fender headstock I can, I just cant sell it for profit.

The idea is that Fender wants to make money off of their design, and they dont want anyone else too. Its not greed, its just wanting credit where credit is due.

BTW: The Valenti bass that I bought off of Nino Brown was built by Nino Brown, for Nino Brown. Im also pretty sure I bought it below the cost of parts. There are even a couple of small dings in the body to attest to the fact. There is nothing wrong with that. If he were to build that same bass *for me* and sell it to me at a price that would give him some profit, then he would probably anger some guys at Fender.

How about this one? I just took Tim Cole's idea and gave it a little more "edge" - I think it turned out really well, myself, and it's different enough from Fender while retaining that look.

This one looks like a can opener!

I couldn't disagree with the traditionalists more. Make it your own design. If you're going to make it look like a Fender, then just buy one. Too many other basses look like that. There is no need to reinvent that wheel.

I liked your design, but if it looks like that Harmony, just change it a little and it will be yours.

I like mine, for what it's worth. It reminds me of something, but I have no idea what, so I might be copying somone and have the slightest...

That's looks a lot like the Aria Pro headstock.

Still worth trying.

Nino, I got to thinking: how about the traditional Fender shape, but on a 3+2 headstock?

The shape would be familiar enough to be appealing, but different enough to be legal. Or has Fender ever done a 3+2 that I don't know about?

I would totally dig a wide spaced five-string Jazz with a 3+2 traditional-shaped headstock and an MM/J p'up configuration.

Oh sorry, let me wipe up this drool.

Now, back to the subject. Could you do one of these?
