Vapid Super Bowl Performance

You know, they just can't keep wheeling "The aging rocker star that you've heard of" out of the home once a year for the Superb Owl. I will agree that The Weekend's performance was tepid and very one dimensional, and left me with zero desire to go looking for his music. At least he had a live mic during the performance. Watching the violinists fake their parts was painful. The whole show felt lazy, as other than people in red jackets, nothing was actually on the field. And what was with those guys prancing around with jock straps on their faces?!! I guess COVID may have had something to do with it, but it just seemed like past half time show were much more of a spectacle, regardless of what you may have thought of the music.

I remember when the Superb Owl was in Jacksonville (my hometown) and Paul McCartney was the half time 'entertainment'. I watched it on TV and thought he was terrible. Years later, I was living here in London and got to watch him at the Olympic opening ceremony - and he was worse!

In 40-50 years, most stuff won't be relevant or even remembered.

I assume you mean excluding the likes of the Beatles, Stones, Zep, Jimi, Cream, The Who, Sabbath, Rush, The Doors, Queen... I'll stop here but I can keep going. And it's not just old farts like me - every generation are digging it - just check the comments for these bands out on YouTube. Kids thanking their parents or TV/Film soundtracks for turning them on to real music.

Not necessarily. We assume that everyone who is massive now will go down in history. But that's not always the case. In 50, 100 years' time, rock music will be something that is briefly mentioned in history books and maybe the Beatles and one or two other bands/artists will be held out as exemplars. The rest will be largely forgotten.

I was very happy for The Gronk to get 2 td passes pretty quick. But what about Phoebe Bridgers on SNL the night before? Two trumpets and 3 drone guitars, out of tune violin like The Velvet Underground and a blood curdling scream. The halftime show was a spectacle I guess. but content free...

Ok. I'm gonna say it. Who the Hell is the Weekend? I am surprised when I woke up today and checked and no one else is talking about the Super Bowl Halftime extravaganza on TB.

I won't outright say it sucked. I mean I guess people like that form of vapid, blech and I won't question the man's talent. Definitely something that I would not buy into. I guess he is following in a long series of poor Super Bowl Halftime shows.

I think the Joan Jett / Miley Cyrus Pregame performance was better and at least authentic.

What did you think?
It was ok, my biggest issue is the mix was poor on my TV (at least).

I thought his dancers looked like they had jockstraps on their heads. Appropriate for the event. I understand where the idea came from, but....they looked like jockstraps. I wasn't impressed with the music, though I was impressed by the production and how they used the whole stadium.

WOW. Hard eye-roll here, bud.

Is there any more of an Ultimate Boomer Move than to demand recognition and gratitude for things they grew up with but didn’t personally have a hand in building or creating? If there is, I’d LOVE to see it.

There are maybe six people on the planet who wouldn't use this as an opportunity to go take a leak.
I honestly didn’t know animals as leaders were a band! I even have some Jim Dunlop guitar picks with the name “animals as leaders” on them. I just thought it was some catchy slogan I’d never heard. Anyway, I liked the picks, so I guess the band has that going for themselves.

Interesting. I listened on a nice setup and it sounded really good.

That actually was Springsteen? We convinced ourselves it was a lookalike. Why would they have Springsteen, someone identified with New Jersey, act like a midwest farmer? That's why we thought it wasn't actually Springsteen.

One down, two to go. Only Tom Waits and Neil Young remain unbought (and me, of course :))

It was not a great game. It was not a great halftime show. And I too wondered "Who TF is 'the Weekend'? But my wife at least vaguely recognized a couple of the tunes, so he must be on the radio a lot. At least I'm pretty sure they were using his live mic feed on the opening number, though they'd cut over to the pre-recorded mix by the end.

You know, I think 60's rock recordings are already starting to not hold up well. I spun some Stones for my wife, who grew up in another country where the Stones' cultural cache did not travel. The quality of some of those recordings ... woof ... to Millennials it must sound like 1920's clarinet jazz off a moldy wax cylinder. I mean, kids nowadays can literally make recordings that sound more professional on their phones.

You are missing his point. He wasn't demanding recognition or claiming to have anything to do with those songs. He was stating that even these moldy, oldies are still in rotation - either the originals or remakes. My 11 year old knows this. @Richie Se7en is absolutely right. Young people that are young enough to be the grandchildren or great-grandchildren of the listed artists are digging them.
