Vapid Super Bowl Performance

It would have been better if someone actually had been given a bass and been told, "You got 15 minutes kid...make it count."
I had a whole line up of bass riffs.
Alright, here we go ...

Super Mario Brothers Theme, into
Another One Bites the Dust, into
Zelda theme, into
Higher Ground, into
Tetris theme, into
Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty theme, and finish it off with
a Jaco-inspired America The Beautiful, and

Take a bow! Don't worry that there is nobody in the crowd clapping, they saw you on TV!

Many of these posts sound like my grandfather (back in the 70s) saying, “Who the heck is Led Zeppelin?”
The Weeknd is the sound of the new generation, and the guy is HUGE!
I actually gave it an honest listen. Not my thing, but the song, “Earned It,” was cool. And, even though the music was obviously prerecorded, the low bass sound at the end of that song sounded really good.
Btw ... He had the #1 trending video on YouTube this morning.

Maybe because I don't care about the lyrics I didn't even notice that.

Oh. I have never not associated him with New Jersey.

...a bunch of people who complain about not being able to make money playing music are complaining about someone who has made a lot of money playing music.
Well I for one could care less what he got paid...and I think someone here stated earlier that the halftime performers actually dont get paid...beats me though. I just sat in front of my TV, wings on a plate, beer in my hand ready to watch some usually good TV. The game was so lame that I actually was pulling for this guy I never heard of to really step up and wow me. Maybe that happened for others but as for me I was playing poker on my cell phone about 2 minutes into it. That was more entertaining.

Now get off my lawn you meddling kids!

My point is that there are people performing (like me and many others on this forum). That is what gets me going, regardless of genre.

I never thought I'd wake up giving nods to Miley, but here you go.

Miley's interesting, because if you think about the fact she's been performing professionally consistently since she was a kid, and the diversity of stuff she has performed in that time ... I wonder if she's not secretly one of the most talented people on the planet. Is she gonna become the next Michael any day now? Crazier things have happened, recently.

The bass line to Don't Stop Believing into Another One Bites the Dust into Sweet Child of Mine into Peter Gunn into Twilight Zone into Higher Ground into Rappers delight.

That's just me though.

Not much of a secret if you ask me. I think she has matured in some way and is about to become [even more of] a badass.

Normally I keep my opinions on artists to myself, but I'll just say a quick comparison of the aforementioned artist's lyrics compared to this Weekend person is quite revealing. Why is it so hard to make a compelling song without being overtly vulgar in today's day and age? Not that artist's like the Stones didn't have some darker/cruder lyrics from time to time, but at least they were more witty and subtle. I'm in my early 20s too so it's not even an age thing for me. I just flat out don't get it; nor would I want to.
It's about shock value rather than talent or musical ability. If I can get people talking about my dirty or vulgar lyrics. It keeps them from talking about my lack of skills.

There is a lot of good strong talented folks around just not as shocking so they go unheralded.

IMHO :)

Ok. I'm gonna say it. Who the Hell is the Weekend? I am surprised when I woke up today and checked and no one else is talking about the Super Bowl Halftime extravaganza on TB.

I won't outright say it sucked. I mean I guess people like that form of vapid, blech and I won't question the man's talent. Definitely something that I would not buy into. I guess he is following in a long series of poor Super Bowl Halftime shows.

I think the Joan Jett / Miley Cyrus Pregame performance was better and at least authentic.

What did you think?

Among the world's best-selling music artists, with over 75 million records sold,[11] The Weeknd has won three Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, nine Juno Awards, and has been nominated for an Academy Award.[12] He holds several chart records, being the first artist to simultaneously hold the top three positions on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart with "Can't Feel My Face", "Earned It", and "The Hills".

With no disrespect intended to you, what merit do these 'awards' you mention hold in this day and age? How many of these 'artists' will be relevant 40-50 years from now? I may be old and my lawn is fenced, but so much of the music released in the 2000's hurts my ears, while completely lacking any identity. It's sad to me how 'views' and 'likes' can turn so many never-woulda-beens into somebody. Remember '15 minutes of fame' anyone?

Who gets to determine the worth of anybody's artistic merit? You?

Yep. And you do too. Part of being a thinking feeling individual is assessing what’s presented to you and forming your own opinions.

No different than what the people who issue awards do. Most assemble a committee that offers its personal opinion. Or if it’s the RRHF then it’s one guy (the founder’s) decision who gets in.

And industry created awards and lists are heavily influenced by the amount of money a given work or performer brings into that industry. Because what else can they possibly try to assess or actually measure when you get right down to it?

Industry lists and awards are measures of commercial success. Nothing wrong with that. As long as you don’t try to read more into them than what’s actually there, then there’s no harm done.

In 40-50 years, most stuff won't be relevant or even remembered.

I'm simply an Old Geezer who doesn't like this new music. I was raised, educated, and uplifted by the many black artists I admired, loved, and revered in my day, and I simply don't understand current hip-hop artists. It looked like one hell of a production from quite an artistic version, and with utterly no disrespect in mind, this sort of thing just isn't for me. I wish him further success and a great career.

Weird, The guys with Jockstrap Masks I could've done without! I was more disappointed that Ariana Grande didnt make a cameo!
I kind of had a feeling the foo fighters were gonna make an appearance, & the ubiquitous Dave Grohl & they have a new album out, but alas, I was disappointed again! But yes the show Sucked! game was entertaining at least!
