Vegetarian Club Anyone?

You are right. Everything we do is harmful to the earth and animals to some degree. I guess the notion is that we do as much as *we think is reasonable* to curtail the harm we cause.

Chances are the glue that is used in the flooring beneath your feet is partly made from animals (horses), but we still have to walk on floors.

Some people use this kind of reasoning to not bother going veg, but I dont think that really has any merit.

Even if we skip eating meat twice a week it makes a difference.

Every little bit helps.

Funny that you mention this, as i recently have taken some thought to making the leap from vegetarian to vegan. I know some things to avoid when it comes to veganism but not everything. I am not going to do this at this exact moment as i have to start changing some things in my life, and researching before i can make the leap completely.

in order to do this i may need some help. can anyone list some websites that i can get information from, as to what to avoid, and what i can use to substitute what i can't eat?

Recommendations of brand names, Clothing, products that use animal testing, or suggestions as to anything that pertains to veganism is much appreciated, thank you.

Check out the Vegetarian Resource Group

and, wait for it....

the PETA website (gulp) is full of good info on what to avoid and has useful links.

Also search John Robbins (son of the founder of Baskin and Robbins)

He wrote some excellent books including "Diet For A New America" which had a strong influence on me becoming vegan.. and sticking to it damn it!

And I hate to tell you guys but the basses you own are very likely made from glue which is partly made from horse hoofs. If you have a one piece body and a non-bone nut you might be okay.

Is this stuff bothersome? Absolutely, but as we continue to do what we think is reasonable, an effort is being made and that is at least something. Better than the alternative for sure.

Oh and if you want to avoid companies that test on animals avoid Proctor and Gamble at all costs. They are brutal for the amount cruelty they cause.

I went to the p&g website. Jesus they own alot of things. my goal would be to cut off my funding to such companies (by possibly not buying any products at all). i realize they own a crap load of soap companies, which also caused me to remember soap = fat. what is a direction to go in that does not involve this (and still use soap?)

I could obviously look this up (and am going to) but if you do not use regular soap , then personal experience is a good idea.

thank you for your help

...if you have a hard time locating items in a store, there's a great place online that has a wide varierty of completely vegan items you can order:

http://www.veganstore.com/

... and don't forget your strap - no leather, please! (someone else made other site suggestions to me way back in the thread - i'm too lazy to scroll back and look right now...)

http://www.couchguitarstraps.com/

I already no longer purchase any leather products (though i wear doc. martins that i bought before i went vegetarian..that ive been aching to get rid of in favor of something animal friendly..but man...size 14 shoes anyone?).

Thanks for the links. I was wondering where i could get a nice strap without those nasty side effects (death)

So what happens if you get a serious illness? Do you put aside your ethics in the face of your own mortality?

Luckily i've never been in that kind of situation, but i have a feeling there are alternatives. i know some people's stomachs can no longer handle meat after crossing over for a long while (i wouldn't know about myself, i haven't been unfortunate enough to accidentally have eaten meat since). Not to mention people who just can't handle it at birth (i know people who are vegetarian for this very reason).

not having alternatives i have a feeling would cause a major problem, also largely due to the religious problems that could come up with people who are religiously adverse to meat.

if it came down to it though, sadly i don't know what my decision would be... facing your own mortality is something that is unfathomable, and putting myself in the mindset of someone who is in that situation is impossible.

From not eating meat?

Not likely. Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus have been vegetarian for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. We're talking millions of people over many, many years. That in itself proves that there is no harm in a veg diet.

Looking at the cholesterol laden American diet on the other hand....

Some use glycerin soap. You can also buy soap made from olive oil and other vegetable based soaps. It takes a bit of looking, but once you have found the info its really not that bad.

I think anyone can take something way too far (look at environmentalists, they have practically crippled civilization). As a Christian, I believe that we are to be good stewards of all that comes within our sphere of influence, but I also believe that God put everything on this earth for our resource. In fact it says so in the Bible;

Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

So I dont have a problem when it comes to a decision between me and an animal. I'm not going to wreck my car and kill my family to save an animal. And I'm not going to quit wearing leather. And if I found myself lost in the wilderness and could only find animals to eat, I'd probably starve-but not because i was worried about the animal, just that I dont think I could get it to go past my tongue.

What about the next verses:
"29: I have provided all kinds of fruit and grain for you to eat. 30 And I have given the green plants as food for everything else that breathes. These will be food for animals, both wild and tame, and for birds."

Sounds to me like god wants us to "rule" over animals, but to eat fruits and grains.

No, no, no. I was trying to follow on from the discussion on products that have been tested on animals. Since all medicines have been animal tested then how would you go about getting modern medical attention?

Reaver, you have to understand where Andrew is coming from. We vegetarians often are presented with "false dilemmas" discussing vegetarianism. Especially with animal experimentation, someone invariabely says, "Let say your mom was sick, and they had to test a drug on an animal that might save her life." This could not happen now, as things stand with the FDA. Plus, you'd be shocked of how little medicine has been successfully developed using animal experiementation, and the how many millions of animals are killed and tortured in the name of "science".

I certainly see how it can be seen. But the thing is before any drug can be approved for clinical testing then it must first be tested on animals. I mean every single new drug. So I was wondering what vegans do.

As I said I was merely curious on what people do. Ok maybe 'what if you were dying' was a bit too hypothetical. So i'll just say if you are ill, as I know I've had to take medicine at some point.

No, and it's a legitimate question about veganism and how far the ethics of veganism stretch. I'm genuinely curious.

If I wanted to troll I could have written that question in so much more provocative ways.

OK cool. Just the couple comments you made in this thread were challenging questions towards vegetarianism without any followup, so I couldn't tell if you were trying to understand or trying to stir the pot.

I'm sure it would be case by case with vegans, some won't use medications, some will. Your principles don't exist in a vaccum, reality will throw problems at you that you can't get your principles around sometimes. Ultimately I think a vegan who is forced to use medications to survive still puts in days/months/years of living a lifestyle with far less pollution and water consumption. I don't feel the need to use medications, if the circumstances arise, defames the time you've lived as a vegan. But that doesn't mean I agree with animal testing.
