Vegetarian Club Anyone?

So on my quest to eat healthier I found out some more bad news. After leaving regular milk alone for several years now I have been using soy milk. Well it turns out that soy milk or soy products have an ingredient called Carrageenan! which from what I have been reading about is very unhealthy for the human body. So now I was looking to almond milk. And some of it has the same. This is very frustrating and its almost to the point where nothing is safe. I suppose my next comment will come with some protest but to some degree processed foods are probably a necessary evil. The reason I say that and feel free to disagree with me if that with out it could the human population WITH SOOO MANY PEOPLE TO FEED as it is now survive? MY GUESS IS NO! At any rate I am on my quest to find a substitute for the soy milk that I have come to love. This is extremely aggravating. Your thoughts.

You could make your own almond milk. Its easy and you would know exactly what goes into it.

I did this a long time ago so my memory might be faulty. Adjust if necessary.

1/2 cup skinless almonds
2 cups cold water
1 or 2 pitted dates for sweetness

blend and strain (might try using cheese cloth to strain)

chill if necessary

Cool guys! I am headed to Costco tomorrow so I will check it out: a quick question for you guys..is that chemical which is from what I understand red seaweed is that would give the milk the sweet taste and thickness? You would think they could do without that is that the only purpose No???? Also now I have to figure out how to increase my protein since I'm losing some of it that I was getting from the soy milk. I had that for breakfast with honey nut cheerios every single morning... but oh well I'll manage

Protein is really no big deal. I think you need 5% of your total caloric intake to be protein... if I recall correctly.

Alot of things have protein, but if you want to dose up a bit try lentils, beans, nuts etc.

Iron and B12 are much more of a concern to me but if you eat a healthy well balanced diet its not hard. B12 is found in many cereals. Dark green leafy vegetables are good for iron.

One cup of cooked fresh spinach contains about one milligram more iron than you'll find in 3 ounces (85 grams) of beef liver, which has long been known for its iron content. And far more than you'd encounter in a head of lettuce. In fact, you'd need to eat the entire head of lettuce to gain just 2.02 milligrams of iron, a fraction of what you'll find in spinach [source: USDA].

However, spinach also contains oxalic acid which inhibits iron absorption. So it's good to eat it with foods that enhance iron absorption like citrus fruits or certain vegetables like broccoli, sweet peppers, tomatoes and potatoes [source: Tsang].

Carrageenan is used as a binder, thickening agent, and as a stabilizer. It is also used in medicine.

Still going strong as a veggie 1.5 years no meat. I do eat some fish, seafood now and some cheese (not much) but beside that no meat, milk, or animal dairy for the most part.

My weight is still good and no pills.

So I went and picked up the Original Almond milk from Costco's and I must say..."I dont think I will be missing the soy milk too much!" but only 1 gram of protein vs the 6 from the soy, but I can deal with that. Thanks guys for the callout. My only question now is why does the sweetened almond have to have that ingredient in it

"CARRAGEENAN" cant they make it sweetend without using it?

Just saw on Mystery Diners a San Fran restaurant The Source. I know there are some people who live there on here and was wondering how good there food really is.
Looks like it has good reviews, but there have been so many instances of reviews not being legit, I'm rather skeptical of them.
Not sure if I'll get to San Fran in the near future, but always interested in good vege/vegan eateries.

Have you tried the Califia Almond with Toasted Coconut? Tastes good, and I like it for cooking too.
