Verellen Kalaloch (speaker cable) problem (gets hot !!)

I just looked at a gut shot of the Kalaloch:

It's pretty clear that this is a really high end, expensive handmade amp, so there's not much bad to be said about that.

But you just wonder if the amp builder knows enough about making things other than tube amps. I'm sure the tube preamp side is impeccable. Turret boards, chassis mounted sockets and pots, etc., this stuff looks pristine. But the backside, w/ the 1/4" jack, the non-recessed voltage switch, etc. That is worrying.

I mean, it can run in bridged mode, sending 1400 watts through a 1/4"? I can defend a lot of things, but that? Yeah, no.
 
As far as I can see, not every Kalaloch has that Voltage switch. Dunno why mine has one though, maybe it's also because it's one of the earlier versions, who knows. Anyway, I searched some pics of the Verellen Meatsmoke, that's the 300 W tube head (oh my)... Look at this pic, also NO speakon connections..... This is also one hell of an amp you know.

Tube amps usually don't have them. Not the same issue.

Yeah, no doubt, some tube amps have them, but most tube amps that I've seen don't. And usually it's less of a safety issue because the sleeve on most tube amps is chassis ground and it's fewer watts. Your amp can put out 1400 watts in bridged mode. And when bridged, the sleeve is not connected to ground. This means a freak accident can do ridiculous amounts of damage in a short amount of time. Like sound engineer drops a mic cable behind the cab and their metal bits touch.
 
Sorry to disagree with you yet again Rick but the NL4 series of plugs and sockets are the defacto standard for SpeakOns on pro-audio equipment. This is for compatibility reasons.
Where compatibility is concerned it's the socket that can be a problem, not the plug. NL2 sockets other than the speakon combo won't accept NL4 plugs. The NL2FX plug will work with either NL2 or NL4 sockets. NL4 sockets are standard on most pro sound power amps for bi-amping, which doesn't apply to bass amps. As for the legality of 1/4" in Europe what has been banned there for quite a few years is banana plugs, because they're close enough in dimension to fit into similar style AC outlets.

Is that so? I feel like I've seen banana-style sockets on new-ish speakers. But I guess banana-style sockets can accept bare wire, so that doesn't mean I've seen banana plugs.
