Very impressed by the AMpeg BA115.

And a gear snob raises it's ugly head ...

Not at all - I played Peavey gear for years, and still own a couple of Peavey cab... I'm not not automaticaly impressed with everything that has a big A on it - it still has to get the job done for me, and that combo, and the B2RE didn't - plain and simple...

Since when is it wrong to state that something didn't work for someone???

When you say it in a manner meant to insult those who have a different opinion than you, i.e. as you say, "easily impressed, or, "I swear, some Ampeg fanboi's would think a turd sounded great if it was sporting an Ampeg badge...".
You have a problem with Ampeg? That's perfectly fine. That doesn't give you license to berate those who like Ampeg.

Yeah, when it's assumed that my criticism on the gear being discussed is based more on personal preferences, and not on actual performance experience, then you're likely to get a comment in return like that...

I realize that people who get butthurt at a little critical discussion can take that as "berating", though... Feel free to criticize ANY of my gear choices - I promise I won't cry about it...

Or, you can't stand it when it's pointed out that you're impressed with mediocre gear... There's one of those combos at a rehearsal space I've used a few times, and I actually tried to make it work so that I wouldn't have to haul gear there - but it wouldn't get the job done *for me*...

I really don't care what anyone plays, to be honest - but don't get butthurt when other people aren't as easily impressed as you are, and you've invited comments on a public forum...

I swear, some Ampeg fanboi's would think a turd sounded great if it was sporting an Ampeg badge...

Impressed by mediocre gear? I use to work at a shop that sold Genz Benz and they didn't do it for me. Volume was nice but the tone wasn't my cup of tea. Yet, some guys love'em and that is cool. I don't attack the Benz guys on here because they like them. Having a different opinion about an amp that I like doesn't hurt my feelings. Yet, when you saying. "Of course, I'm not surprised that someone who likes the B2RE would also be impressed with the BA115..." At that point your not stating an opinion on the gear but the person who likes the gear.

Your pretty much saying "Anyone who likes what I consider crap, will probably like what else I consider crap. Therefore I am not surprised."

I am not always impressed by Fender, I have owned them but the new stuff in the QC department I have found to be at issue with. Yet, I don't come on here and insult people who love the new Fender stuff that they have either bought or tried out. I might state why I have problems with the new Fender stuff, but not the people who like it.

I am not a fan of Behringer amps but I am not hi-jacking the Pro-Behringer thread to post my opinion of the people who like them. I might post to discuss why I don't care for the amp. See the difference.

I had the BA115T with the tube preamp for about a year. It was great if I was playing alone or just farting around with a guitarist or something, but as soon as my guitarists showed up to practice with their big vintage Sunn and Fender amps, I was immediately drowning.

I bought a 200W Gallien Krueger combo since then (for cheaper than the Ampeg) and it's about half the weight, twice the volume, and a million times as versatile.

Im with georgestrings on this one, and I generally like
Ampeg. I've played one of those combos quite a few times, and think they sound good, but are only adequate for drummerless coffeeshop gigs, and low volume rehearsals. The B2RE is one of the most sterile sounding underpowered turds I've ever had the displeasure of trying.

My older amp was the BA115HPT.... the 220 watt preamptube version.

It was just loud enough for small venue gigs. I had the gain up and the master volume at 4:00.... it was almost pinned.

I guess it depends on who you play with. But for my 6 piece cover band, it wasnt loud enough for stage volume.

True, lot's of variables here.
For me, my BA115HPT has the potential to be brutally loud.

Drummer, 2 guitars....

YMMV

come on, george...you're being obnoxious. anyone who likes stuff you don't like, you insult them like they know nothing and call them "fanbois." that's not critical discussion and don'tmistake it for critical discussion, either. it was only semi-funny at first, and now it's just ridiculous.

Brutally loud ? are those guitars plugged in ? Personally I find it hard to get excited by an 80 lb combo.... Other than the B100r ..that I could getexcited by, can't afford it though.

FWIW I've hated most evey combo I've ever heard. That B100 and of course a good B15 would be the exceptions...

OK, Jimmy - I'll scale it back a bit, but it's difficult sometimes when there are alot of people who seem to think that every Ampeg product is great... The truth is, I really don't see that combo as being anything spectacular - it sounds OK, but really isn't loud enough for most rock band uses, IMO...

Exactly - and I have to question the standards of anyone who tries to tell me how great the B2RE is...

I'm not slagging Ampeg products in general - I think they have made a ton of fine bass gear over the years, and still have some real gems in their product line... But, it seems obvious *to me* that *some* people have never seen an Ampeg product they didn't think was great... You put the B2RE up against any other amp on the market with similar power ratings, and it quickly becomes obvious that it's grossly underpowered for it's rating... and it's tone isn't anything great, either...

Have you tried it with two tube guitar stacks and a loud drummer?

Yes - two 50 watt JCM 900 Marshalls - but they were reasonable about their stage volume, and the BA115 worked just fine. Anything lacking on stage I could hear rumbling from the FOH PA itself.

I got to demo a Ampeg BA115 today. Great tone and lots of juice for a 100 watts. I don't see what people are talking about when they say it isn't loud enough. More loud than my Acoustic B100 and a bit louder (though not as smooth) as my old Ampeg B100R.
+1 :)

well hey, it isn't my favorite ampeg product ever but in its price range i've yet to find anything as good, so i'll give it that much credit. but that's my opinion, not anyone else's, and if someone doesn't agree, that's ok by me.

You mean the B-15R, not the B100R, right?

My experience w/a BA115... tried using it in rehearsal room.. Dimed everything and a not-so-loud drummer drowned it out. However, I took it with me on a gig in which I knew my Bmax was having power supply issues. Used the preamp of the 115 to feed my Carvin power amp and it sounded great..

I had to check and make sure which Ampeg we were discussing here...as much as it PAINS me deeply (and not in a "butthurt" way), Im gonna agree with George :hiding:
I also tried to use this amp at a practice space where it lived so that I wouldnt have to haul my gear in, and I had it dancing all around the floor and had to take almost all of the low end out of it to keep it from farting like a corn-fed mule.
Not a fan of the B2RE either...and not a fan of George's posts.
It IS possible to express opinions and experiences without getting personal and hurting butts.;)

I have played through other heads that are a bit louder than it in its power range but when EQ'ed right the B2RE seems to do fine. Never have an issue getting good tone out of it, and like it much better than my old GK 300 Watt backline amp. I like how the notes don't loose any articulation much at any of the frequencies. I have found EQing can help a lot more with cutting through than just cranking volumes and gains.
