I think the psuedo-spiritual, 'feel-good' approach to teaching music IS valid and worthwhile, provided the player has ALSO taken the time to vigourously study the 'nuts-and-bolts' approach advocated by people like Mr Berlin. Knowing your instrument inside-and-out, being able to disect harmony/chord theory, and being able to communicate all these things MUSICALLY is very important on your quest to discover your 'inner-artist' on bass. IMO.

I respect that AND the way you phrased it!!!

WHY DO I HAVE TO READ MUSIC TO BE A GOOD ORIGINAL BASS PLAYER????
I DON'T
SO THERE!!!!
there are many ways to scramble the omlette jeff you moron!

you should learn all manners of what is required to be a musician. it makes you a better musician. seriously. learn to read, learn theory, and that way, when you use your inner self to speak to other musicians you'll be speaking the same language and communicate better.

Well said. Your "inner self" is going to be mute without the proper tools to express that self.

I'm pretty sure this is what Jeff was saying- worry about how to play your instrument first and foremost, THEN worry about expressing yourself. If you do the latter first, the former will suffer, although there are exceptions (see Mick Karn).

As far as the ability to read is concerned, for everything that Victor Wooten teaches about your inner self, I'm sure he knows how to read. In fact, I think he's an advocate of learning the language of music, reading and all.

but I needed the soul first then the meat of music second...are we all cut from the same mould?

OK, I don't get this....Jeff is not saying anything against Vic's camp personally. Vic's not saying anything against Jeff personally, he's played at the PSOM and apparently Jeff has taught at Vic's camp (for the record, I've done workshops at both places).
The Bass and Nature Camp has a lot to do with one's interaction with Nature as well as Bass and Music. Your inner self is something for that interaction as well as how one approaches music as an Artist not a student of Music, Music Theory, or Musical Skill. As Jeff has maintained (including in his excellent Mel Bay video) he is focusing on the scholarship of Music and not the pursuit of Art. He's leaving that up to the player after he learns academics.
In a perfect world, every one of my students would go to both learning situations. In my experience and judgment there is much to be learned.
Jeff, they do have an excellent teacher in the persona of Dave Welsch who teaches sight reading, Gerald Veasley, Adam Nitti, Oteil Burbridge, Steve Bailey, Anthony Wellington and every other teacher I've met there has done an incredible job.
A lot of times Vic rotates bassists, therefore Anthony Jackson, Stanley Clarke, Richard Bona, and many others have, like Jeff Berlin, only been there once.
As a friend of mine so aptly puts it, it's not "Yes, but" rather it's "Yes, and".....

Actually there are very few ways to scramble an omlette. How many ways do you know about. I will bet only one or two.

But, there are many items to add to it which is the " artful" approach to cooking, the "inner self" approach. My inner self likes cheeze. Your inner self likes sausage. The last element of playing the very final step to being someone who can play what they hear in their heads (most her can't do this) is their art. Art comes last, not first! Even making an omellet proves this; you have to prepare the ingredients before you can cook. So it is with music; you have to prepare your musical skills before you can play. If any event doesn't tell you this, then they are leaving out the most important element of attending any special event, that of telling you the truth about playing. Why do some here object to this?

Further, please do not make this about Victor. I made clear that I have always discussed the community of events of bass and music and have said (with no apology from me) that without music to regard and work on, you are not going to improve just because somebody told you how. People here always point to art in a classroom but I know that this doesn't work. Has anyone else noticed that almost nobody here talks about LEARNING how to play. Again, why do people here object to this? Thanks.

Of course you should but in your own time and at your own pace. We have a lifetime to learn music but not to apply it?

My love music started as a young child with simple nursery rhymes, my parents did not see the worth in stopping me listening to them in favour of Charlie Mingus. Everything has a place, everything is an experience, everything is a lesson..enjoy the journey, don't focus on the destination.:)
