In this past year, I have been reacquiring basses that I used to own. The first was my Epiphone by Gibson Accubass. It was the very first new bass that I ever bought. I found one last December in not quite mint condition. It didn’t have a scratch on the body but the bridge and pickups look used. The one that I had was either a 1989 or 1990 model. I don’t recall what year I bought it new? The one I bought last year was a 1992 model but it was the same color as my first one.
Maybe 6 months ago I found a 1995 Ibanez SR 800 Soundgear bass in metallic blue. It too was identical in color to my old 95’ SR 800. This bass was also in mint condition. Not a scratch on it. Even the pickups and hardware still look new.
Then 3 weeks ago I finally found the bass that I had been looking for since 1994. I am a big fan of Ibanez Soundgear basses. In 1993, I bought my very first one. A 1993 Ibanez SR 400 Soundgear bass. It was candy apple red and was my baby. I had always wanted an Ibanez bass and it was my very first one. I only had it for a year though. A year after buying it I returned to the Guitar Center that I bought it from and saw a brand new SR 500. I had always kept a minimum of 2 basses once I started playing in bands. When I got my SR 400, I had to trade both of my basses in to get it. That left me with just 1 bass for a year. I wanted the SR 500 to pair with my SR 400 but in order to get it, I had to trade in my SR 400, to put it on layaway. When I got paid the following week, I was going to buy the bass and the salesman was going to cancel my trade. The store manager didn’t know and sold my SR 400 the next day. I still have my 94’ SR 500 and bought another one in 1995 as well. They were my main players since then. When I found this other 93’ SR 400, I jumped on it. The condition was amazing too. Not a scratch on the body. Just a little wear on the frets and lower part of the neck. But here is where it gets weird. There is a very good chance that I just bought my exact old bass back. Mine was built in May of 93’ and was candy apple red. So is this bass. My bass had the D string tuning key installed slightly crooked from the factory. This one is also identical too.
I now have 3 basses left to reacuire. My Charvel B2 in metallic blue, my 20th Anniversary Ibanez Soundgear bass and my Guild B-4ce acoustic bass that got stolen in 2004.
Because of my love for Ibanez Soundgear basses, I want to get more that I find. I found a black 94’ SR 500 that is identical to mine but is a fretless. I’ve never owned a fretless bass before but am considering pulling the trigger on that bass.
