Today I've received my first package ever from Japan:

I have the best girlfriend. For our 6 year anniversary she got me D'Angelo's 'Voodoo'. The recent reissue. Other acquisitions in recent times have been: 'A Love Supreme', 'Gene Krupa, Teddy Wilson & Lionel Hampton', 'Bud Powell in Paris', 'Kooper, Bloomfield and Stills: Super Session', 'Headhunters', 'Radio Music Society' and a couple of others I'm probably forgetting.

On Record Store Day, I went down to Slow Boat, a great store here in Wellington, and saw Herbie Hancock 'Secrets'. I didn't get it because I was low on funds. I'm not in the city at the moment but I really hope it's still there when I get back on Saturday! Such a good record.

Not having a turntable sucks. My dad said he'll take a look and see what he can do. He's pretty good at fixing stuff but he lives 3 hours away so I don't know when that'll be possible.

If I happen to get the grant/scholarship I applied on, I'll get a Pro-ject Debut Carbon.

Hey, if I were you, I'd look into a Rega rp1 performance pack instead, Rega tt's are more "musical" than Pro-Ject's. Price is about the same.

I'll shop around and read reviews if I do get the scholarship. Which isn't a given, far from it.

If that doesn't happen and my dad's attempt at giving a second life to my dual cs450 fails I have a Lab-2100 back at home that just needs a needle.

that`s a nice set up you have! Everything all nice and centralized. I need something like that.
My turntable is over my fireplace/on the mantle along with my so-so Sony surround sound dvd/cd player. I don`t have enough room for all my records in one place so my vinyl is scattered around the apartment in a few different places: book shelves,milk crates ,by my turntable on the mantle and over my computer desk. I really need to get my stuff in order.

Any of you listen to Pretty Lights (electronic stuff)? For his newest album he recorded everything onto vinyl and then sampled from that, interesting idea. He is also offering physical copies as well as free downloads.

Coincidentally, yesterday I complained about it at the YouTube Vinyl Community. It's been said so many times that US$40 is a steep price to pay for an LP, but it seems there are lots of people willing to pay that and more. I try not to pay more than US$20 plus shipping (assuming that shipping charges are reasonable, which isn't the case so often).

I was just looking at Frances the Mute, and the cheapest used was $60, which I can imagine paying for that because I love it. But anywhere near that for a lot of stuff would bankrupt me real quick. Although I guess that is like a 3 LP(what is the proper word here, vinyl?) album.

Anyone have guides to buying some older equipment, what to look for and such?

NOt sure if this qualifies, but what the heck. I just acquired a Kenwood KD600 granite-base turntable for the purpose of converting vinyl records (or for you New Yawkah's or Bostonians, rekkids), to digital as part of a business.

Subscribing to this thread in any case.

Just listening on the family's cheap all in one thing. Hopefully I will get my own setup sometime after New Years.

I've got this same cube rack in black, pretty much full of LP'S, in my living room. I bought it from a small store that was revamping their interior, for $40 ... I was stoked!

I'm resurecting this thread because vinyl records RULE!

Here's the 'Wall of Sound'. My last apartment was a 3rd floor walk-up, and this 3rd floor apt has an elevator but I still had to disassemble/reassemble the rack for both moves My records are always the most painful thing for me whenever I've had to relocate . Each cube holds about 50 LPs each, & those boxes have about 100 in'em, I believe I have another 6 boxes in the storage unit. Typically pick them up from bands on tour, local record conventions, or any one of the TOO FEW remaining record stores. But MOST of my records come from Goodwill & similar thrift store hunting ... many many many for $1!

Under the stereo, & piling a little too close to the fireplace! In that box labeled 7"s, I've got a bunch of 45 or 33 speed little guys. Down from about 200 in 2001, when I sold the rest to finance a cross country move.

Here's a little collection of one of my fave bands ... 'the Cramps'.
Colored vinyl is always fun, and I got a few dozen of those.

Got some near complete mini collections of a few of my fave classic rock bands: Cream, Zappa, Pink Floyd, The Who, Beatles, Kinks, etc. Cube right below is ALL Rolling Stones released up to 1989 'Steel Wheels' rec .. including 'Their Satanic Majesties Request' with the hologram cover, & 2 copies of 'Sticky Fingers' with the original working zipper! Another cube is aaallll Grateful Dead pre 1987.

At least 2 or 3 times in my life I've made the mistake of selling off almost all my records to finance something else ... and I've always regretted that down the road. This collection has been building for about 9 years this time, & I've already decided that I AM taking a few of them with me when I go

Yes. An LP stylus is not designed to read the wider grooves of a 78 RPM record correctly. Assuming that your turntable allows for interchangeable headshells, the best you can do is having a headshell with a regular cartridge, and another headshell with a 78 RPM cartridge. Notice that most likely you'll have to change the vertical tracking force for each cartridge (using the tonearm's counterweight).

Does your turntable even accommodate the 78rpm speed? My current TT does not.
