VT Bass Rackmount...

anybody running an RPM and VT parallel (I originally read about using the RPM and RBI that way from a thread started by JGR)?

In another thread (I think) someone said they run VTRM clean and RPM dirty

That would be me! :)

Having had the chance to use both combinations of clean/dirty I keep going back to the VT Bass for the clean tone and the RPM for dirty. For the tone I'm going for, I find it easier to get a natural throaty clean from the VT Bass and fine tune the "grind" frequency with the RPM.

I said this before though, I don't think it's possible to get a bad tone from the VT/RPM set up unless of course they're both turned off.

Later this week, I plan on getting new strings and borrowing a friends room to mic up my rig. Hopefully that will shed some light on the agressive capabilities of this set up!

I set up VTRM/RPM in parallel just before my New Year's Eve gig. Here's clams-and-all audio from the drunk set... what we lack in finesse we make up for with volume. :ninja:

Again, that was my first ever go with the VTRM/RPM rig, but I'm happy with the result, and because it's such a versatile setup I look forward to more tweakery (slow month, no gigs until the 25th). In another thread (I think) someone said they run VTRM clean and RPM dirty; I'd like to try that, along with many other tone tweaks.

And yep, I've been grateful to JGR for inventing/discovering the SansAmps-in-parallel option years ago. :)

Great tone my friend. Makes me want to pick one up!
Take Care,
Brent

I'll definitely try RPM dirty, VTRM clean next week. Love the idea of fine-tuning the grind. I also love the VT grind with Character right of noon, but just as you said, there are a bazillion great tones to be had from a VT/RPM rig. I look forward to your soundclips; I'm going to try to get more as well.

not sure if it has been mentioned, but for those who want better mid control, couldnt you just run one of these in the loop?

Looks like a cool device! I'm sure I'd find it useful, tone-wise, but I try to maintain the K.I.S.S. principle for my rig, and part of that involves no pedals: all I see is another battery to change. :ninja:

No offense to those who do use pedals... in fact I envy those who use them well.

one knob and one battery extra could equal your dream preamp....

Now that I've added the RPM to my VTRM rig, I no longer need the Bassmid thingie because the RPM has a nearly identical semi-para mid. But sure, for those who just want to stick with the VTRM and nothing else, that extra pedal could be a cool addition.

That's my preference too but I can't seem to escape using pedals.

I've always thought that if I found a small, always on pedal that I had to have in my rig I'd Power Grip it inside the rack somewhere so I didn't need to see it/set it up.

Last night I spent alittle time comparing the preamp using the regular sound vs removing the subsonic filter using the internal jumper. This time I was using my 1212/5. It sounded better than when I tried it with the nv610. There was a slight difference in sound but, neither was better than the other so, I went back to using the filter and therefore getting the max headroom out of my amp.

I'm really liking what I'm hearing from the VT, and originally thought I was going to replace my RBI (currently using an RPM & RBI in parallel in my BX1500 effects loop), but the RBI gives me more depth in the low end that the VT is lacking. Both the RBI and VT sound great, different but very sweet. I find that the VT has a lot more going throughout the mids, whereas the RBI has more going on the low end and the upper mids/treble regions.

I did make the mistake of running all three in parallel... yea, it was freakin awesome :bassist: I got to keep all vintage-like mid growl from the VT and the modern/aggressive low-end and top sparkle from the RBI. Now I need a larger rack if I want to keep all 3 preamps - so much for downsizing my rack

Dammit... now you've made me wanna upsize my rack! :spit: (Yeah I know: TWSS :p)

I'm currently running RPM plus VTRM. The RPM covers the lows beautifully, but yeah, I would love to hear the RBI sparkle in the mix as well!

I'll try to get a recording of the rig - most likely I'll take the DI right out of the BX1500. If time permits (ahem, if the wife tells me time permits - LOL), I'll try to get multiple recordings (RMP + RBI, RMP + VT, RPM + VT + RBI).

I agree that the RPM covers the lows nicely, but there is just something the RBI brings to the table that really adds some girth on the low end as well as that sparkle up top
