VT Bass Rackmount...

I'll try to get a recording of the rig - most likely I'll take the DI right out of the BX1500. If time permits (ahem, if the wife tells me time permits - LOL), I'll try to get multiple recordings (RMP + RBI, RMP + VT, RPM + VT + RBI).

I agree that the RPM covers the lows nicely, but there is just something the RBI brings to the table that really adds some girth on the low end as well as that sparkle up top

I will definitely try VT/RBI, maybe this Saturday. And then I'll see if I can try all three.

I look forward to the sound samples if/when you can get 'em, but I know how that goes... I've been promising audio on my newest bass (got it over a month ago!) but haven't yet had the chance.

OK, just did a quick down & dirty...
Just my Pedulla Thunderbass (using Kent Armstrong custom soapbars & Audere preamp + Ernie Ball Cobalts) into the BX1500 w/ no sansamp at all:

Same bass with the Sansamp trio :bassist:

While it doesn't sound bad, the DI can't compare to the sound that pours from cabs (I'm using my GK's at home, neo212 + neo112 - my Berg NV610 is at my guitar player's house). The differences are much more subtle in the recordings than they are live with the amp/cabs

The EQ is not flat (I don't run it that way, but I did post what my EQ settings are in the comments of the sound file)

Please excuse the sloppy playing - I am way out of practice

Your bass sounds great in both clips, but yeah, I definitely prefer it with SansAmps. Using all three is too cool! :)

I was going to remark on the subtlety of your SansAmp processing compared to mine, but yeah, cabs make a big difference.... my recording was mic, not DI. I'll try to get more clips up myself.

Tech21, I know that I've needled you guys for getting almost there but, not quite on some of you products but, I am REALLY impressed with your new Flyrig 5 for guitar. I think you really nailed it and I'll be buying one when they are released. Really great job guys!

1st I've seen of the Flyrig. Looks very cool. Just an idea Tech 21...Maybe a bass version with a VT bass, Oxford, & Bass Chorus & DI.........Just saying

Sorry for thread derail.....Back to VTRM.....:D

Been lurking the boards for awhile, figured I would sign up eventually, but this thread convinced me to do it today.

Anyways, I'd come to the conclusion I was going to pick up the VT-RM after reading a number of different threads here, and consulting with the local music shop employee and the recording engineer I'll be working with next week, both of whom incidentally are also bass players.

So I picked it up earlier this week and tried it out at rehearsal. Very pleased to this point, I was quickly able to dial in a good tone, and very quickly tweak that tone to work with the rest of the band.

I do agree with Primakurtz on the cons of controls that are so expressive, but as well I don't see that being too much of an issue in the rackmount form factor.

This is the first piece in my new rig, and so far I'm very pleased. Eventually I'll be pairing this up with a Crown Drivecore PA and (probably) a pair of 2x10s. I may make a lot of trips from the van to the venue, but my back has never whinged about the number of trips, just the payload on any given trip...

I have the VT-RM and was looking into paralleling it with either an RBI or RPM. Seems like a few have gone with the VT-RM/RPM. Has anyone gone VT-RM/RBI? What would be the tonal tradeoffs of these combos?

Here's my hunch: the RBI and VTRM have similar EQs, so there's some redundancy. Also, I love the RBI for its Presence control (high treble), that's tied into the tube emulation circuitry: it's especially valuable for me when using my tweeterless Berg NV610 cab because I can get some nice gritty edge into my tone without the hiss/buzz that often comes from using bright overdrive through a tweetered cab. However the VTRM can also be quite bright, so I'm not sure the RBI will add as much versatility as the RPM with its sweep mid control.

All that said, I definitely plan to try RBI/VTRM!

P.S. Last gig I ran VTRM clean(ish) and RPM dirty, as suggested by someone else. The idea is to voice the dirt (so to speak) using the sweep mid, and that's a lot of fun.

P.P.S. I haven't had enough tweak time this year for various reasons. :( I hope to try RBI/VTRM, maybe even RBI/RPM/VTRM :ninja:, and also record/post some sound samples.

I have the VT Bass (V2) pedal and really like it. I am considering going to a rack mount, however. Have any of you with the VTRM ever tried the pedal converted to rack mount from the following link (halfway down the page):

I was wondering if anyone could do a comparison. I'm just wondering how spending $155 to get my pedal modded would compare to the new VTRM which would cost me $329.

I bought a really nice one off of Kringle77 so he may chime in since he's actually owned both. The one I got off him has an Fdeck HPF3 built into it plus a really usefull para-mid trick knob. It's also equipped with a three position speaker sim switch. Sounds great on my loudest of gigs when paired with a Peavey IPR3000 power amp.

I like the vtrm for what it is but, i do miss the speaker sim button of the V2 pedal. I consider it a trade off for getting the blend control. I guess the vtdi would have all the good features except for the button on the back of the vtrm which allows you to pad the input. I need that with my bass.

Im currently running out of the pre-eq send of my genz benz sm9.2 into the back of the VTRM with the pad engaged. Drive at 9:00, Character at 12:00, Bass 2 clicks to the right, mid 3 clicks to the right and treble all the way counter clockwise. This gives you a flat speaker simulation. This is what I feed to the FOH and in-ears and it's working really well. If I need more cut I turn the mid up higher. I can definitely see where having another eq that could add narrower spikes at around 1.6k would be helpful but, this is working well and it's easy. Turning the drive up with these settings gives you the sound of speakers starting to compress and break up.

I just ordered the VTDI pedal. This will be way easier to use at in-ear practise and acoustic, direct to the board gigs than hauling my over stuffed rack. It will be nice to have use of the speaker sim defeat again as well.

I got the vtdi yesterday and only had about 30 minutes to compare it to the vtrm through a pa top. I also ran a frequency analysis on its functions. They sound the same using the basic features though, the knobs dont end up in the exact same positions. Also, i can get a clean tone with the drive almost off, on the vtdi but i have to use the padded rear input on the back of the vtrm or else it is overdrive city. Keep in mind that i wasnt using a subwooferbor my bass rig but, when i dissabled the speaker sim, i didnt notice much difference in the low end. Analysis showed that the lows got flatter and that the speaker sim slightly boosts around 100hz. Defeating the speaker sim and bite doesnt give a totally flat signal but, it is close.

Im betting that with the bite and speaker sim off this pedal would sound better than the other versions into tweeterless cabs like the nv610. These features also will make it more useful for other instruments like acoustic guitar.
