After spending what feels like a lifetime dreaming of Wals, never expecting to own one, I finally made a move and it arrived last Thursday. It's a 1982 MK1 serial #PB1711, with mahogany core, rosewood fretboard and lacewood facings. It's in near perfect condition for it's age, and the neck is shockingly straight as a board after sitting in the dude's closet for 10 years, I did some minor set up work on it and it plays like a dream. It's going to take a bit of getting used to as it is a little top heavy, and I'm very used to a Stingray's ample thumb rest, but other than that I'm already falling in love with it!

I really had a great experience and wanted to thank both Caca de Kick and Toolmybass, they were very forthcoming with information and helped me out a lot during the process. This Wal community really is pretty special, and I'm so glad to now be a part of it.

Congrats!...and welcome to the wonderful world of Wal. Considering your serial number is only 6 builds different than my old Lacewood it looks like they were cut from same slab of wood. I do miss that bass as it has the best neck out of any bass and or Wal that I have played. I will be looking to re-acquire it in the near future (sold it locally)

Who signed off on the back of your cavity plate?

Also from shade of core on your pic it looks like the standard Mahogany....are you sure it's Walnut?...it should say on back of plate

Cool...Mine was also signed off by Greg!....you can see how the middle parts of both of ours gets a bit darker....and that I haven't seen any other Australian Lacewoods out there....if I were to guess...they came from same wood. Enjoy your Wal and your future g.a.s lol

welcome maedros! I love the neck on my Wal too. it hasn't budged since I did a setup on it 3 months ago. it's got that little soft V in the back but is overall very thin and comfortable. my particular bass has been thru a few sets of hands in the last couple of years but I can't figure out why anyone would ever want to sell this other than desperation for cash. I've gone through 40+ basses on TB over the last 5 years and this kills everything else including Modulii, high end warwicks, vintage US spectors (close call there), pedullas, ken smiths, you name it. I still can't believe I own it!

This is also Olive Ash. I should be making the deal for this bass in the next week or so. I just got the email from Paul yesterday that my gold hardware for the Geddy is in...along with the new frets for this bass. I will probably be getting the service luthier at Fbass to do the fret job!. Will post before and after pics!
If you look at the wood behind the bridge it looks alot like the one pictured above.

About the dots on fingerboard, will you inlay them ?

Correction....mine look like this on the MKIII. This may have been the lightweights that were made avail to Pete at the time of this build.
These look alot like the Hipshot ones on Wal's website on the MKIII but mine are not stamped.
I also noticed PJ that 2 of your other Wals (both new build MKIII's) have the Hipshot Ultralights on them. Did you specify to Paul that you wanted orig. style Schallers on this one?

Wow!
That is some really nice woodgrain.
If I had a couple thousand disposable dollars laying around my next bass would have to be a MK 1 of the Olive Ash variety.
