I may go to acg guitars and look into the uber basses. They are meant to be as close as it gets to a wal.

Also here is a video of flea playing a baby blue wal during the writing process/ jam of what later became give it away. Seen a lot of arguing about this bass in another thread although I can't remember which then stumbled across it.

Almost positive that's the same bass used to record most of BSSM. It now hangs on Fleas wall and is covered in stickers
I do remember that vid. Now that you mention it...that bass did have a pretty dark top on it!
Doesn't seem likely Flea used a different bass. The Documentary was done in black and white, so things seem dark in general.
In his more recent home video he shows off the blue bass and calls it the Blood Sugar bass. And the old 90's live videos shows he owned the blue bass and was playing it onstage at least two months before they went in to record BSSM.
A TB'er here that worked at the Bass Centre Hollywood (I used to buy some gear there too) was the also the salesman who sold Flea the blue bass, but I doubt he'd remember when exactly it was sold.

The only official RDCP video that I know the shows Flea using a Wal is the B&W Funky Monks one. I stay with Flea in RDCP tour in Brazil last month and he does not talk about bass lol ! It seems that he is very happy with his old Modulus basses. Also he told me that the cheap Flea's bass is out of production due fabrication quality problems ?
