If visiting the Wal factory, ask Paul if he ever feels the need to protest for better wages or work conditions. Get a picture of Paul picketing. heh.

I'd always thought that the amount you'd save by bringing it over yourself as your own instrument by plane would almost pay for the plane ticket alone instead of having the bass shipped and paying customs and duty fees.
Technically you will still have to declare it on your papers when you land to go through customs. You will also probably have to pay the VAT to take it out of England IIRC. That isnt cheap either!!
It would NOT be hard for customs to pull up on the web to find out what Paul charges for these basses (new).
I finally have all the new gold hardware that i ordered installed on the Geddy. Along with a set of funkmasters.....Was going to do "Big Money" as a demo video for y'all....until i looked into playing it. Not an easy song. (but it would be best song for the Wal) guess we will see after a bit of practice. 
Paul may have suggestions. I don't think you pay VAT (UK people purchasing products from the U.S. do, however), but you have to pay Customs. Definitely research this sooner than later. But Jim knows to do that. He's a methodical person.
Yea Paul would know for sure. I thought i had read somewhere that if your in the UK, you have to pay VAT on goods that are leaving the country.....but that possibly could be just within Europe.
But if you claim it as your own, as an item that you brought with you and are returning home with, I don't think they can charge you duty or taxes? Though I'm not sure how the system works, they may have a record of you not having brought an item that would go into cargo under the plane into the country and question it. Shrug.
It's still easier than Turn The Page! heh. But yeah, a challenge, no doubt. Try Territories. If you can get good at these patterns and Geddy's feel, many of these Wal songs can be relatively easier to play. The Big Money, Time Stand Still, and Open Secrets use a lot of hammer-on/pull-off lines.
Another famous Geddy pattern is the Show Don't Tell (opening/pre-chorus), Prime-Mover (line after first chorus), and Malignant Narcissism using alternating plucking. Those are fun, but difficult to master.
The way I got decent at the YYZ triplets was to first practice Where's My Thing, which uses a similar pattern. It's slower, however, so it's better to get the fingerings right. Then move on to Territories and YYZ.
I wouldnt get into cheating the system of fibbing when it comes to that. Im sure they can find out if you had it with you on the way over.
US/Canada border crossing are a bit different.....example. Your bringing a guitar over the border into the States to jam with some friends. (an unpaid event), you better have proof (a document you get here that has the serial number of the guitar) showing that you registered and owned it before coming into the states. EVEN if item is old/beat-up/used and you dont have those papers.....customs can charge you FULL duty and taxes on the value, as if you bought it in the States and are trying to bring it back.
Working bands have to carry a full ledger and equipment list with all of the serial numbers on them. Even pedals!!!

Whenever I get around to ordering, I'd just let it ship here. Another TB'er here in Seattle said his brand new MkII only cost 300-some-odd dollars in Customs fees. That's a number I can live with.

Did you need everything in gold? pole pieces, etc?
My "Geddy" is actually a "Newsted" & I've been meaning to replace everything in gold or have parts plated - my only concern is fooling with the pole pieces...
I have the Schaller tuners already & was planing to order screws/etc...
