Couple questions..
Does the facing you choose have any effect at all on sound? The body wood is the same, regardless of the facing, correct? For example, a flamed maple facing isn't going to sound any different than Sycamore, correct?

I've officially decided to order one of these eventually. I will never be happy with my bass until I own one I've decided.
The facing most definitely has some affect on sound, it isn't very dramatic and they all sound like Wals, but something like a maple facing will be brighter than a painted body with no laminate.
Ok, is there much difference between Sycamore vs Flamed Maple vs Quilted Mapel?
Your best bet is to discuss the differences with Paul when you're ready to place an order, he's best able to find what you're looking for. A few pages back there was a discussion of the same nature and some specifics as to the tonal differences.
From my experience, 'the sound' depends more on when it was made rather than what it was made from.
On paper I have two identicle fretted 4 string MkII's: shedua faces, mahogany cores, ebony boards. Very different weights, and A/B test both and you realize they sound different; one is warmer, one is crunchier.
My MkI that is made 10 serials away from the one MkII sounds most similar to it.
Same thing with both my '86 basses, one is a solid mahog MkI, the other is a maple faced 5 string MkII, and those two sound most similar to eachother.
Of course this is splitting atoms sitting in a room alone looking for it. They all sound like Wals. The elctronics have alot of adjustability so you can get a fleet them to perform consistant. But as far as facings go I'd say don't worry about supossed tonality, just go with what looks beautiful to you.
