I guess I have a different viewpoint... to me a used Wal that was worth under £1k in the mid-90s will now fetch £4K or more, based on the mystique they have acquired plus the very limited supply. I guess you pay a much higher new price in the US with import duty.

Right now, try finding an old Wal for sale anywere. It seems people are realizing how much more expensive its become and they're hanging onto their basses.
That Chicago ad you posted above, is now three years old. I bought that ^ maple bass from that ad. No way would I be selling it for anywhere near that price today.

Yeah it's been a long time since I've been on Talkbass man. Had a lot of stuff going on. I guess I've just really been out of the loop on the price increases over the years. Congrats on picking up that Mk3, it's absolutely gorgeous! Yeah I guess in hindsight I paid $4,500 for my MK1 and i would likely get more than that now. Okay guys, I guess basically disregard everything I've said

You can probably sell it for $5,500-6,000 now..... it seems though people are hanging on to their Wals as of late..... used market lately has been rather dry
Yeah that's what I figured, although there's no way i would sell it. Contemplating taking the plunge and putting a deposit down on a new build.

Haha that's what I keep telling myself. I don't really have 9 thousand to drop on a bass right now but the wait period is so long that it really only breaks down to like 85 a week haha. Considering selling the Warwick I just bought and putting 2,000 down on a new build.
I would definitely regret the divorce if I bought a Wal...LOL

But the answer to all those is now still yes. My advice is don't delay if you re 100% sure it's what you want. I also couldn't find a used one for the price I was prepared to pay for the specs I wanted.
I hear ya. I'm trying to justify the purchase in my head haha. I don't think I would be upcharged for too many options as I don't want anything too crazy. What are the standard facings offered now? Does anyone know what the cost is to get a top wood that's not amongst that list?There is that as well.

standard facing now is wenge and american walnut....shedua and zebrano are no longer standard facing options standard fretboard is indian rosewood, ebony is an upcharge for fretted instruments..... i haven't heard anything though if Paul charges extra to obtain a CITES certificate for using rosewood.....
as far as alternate facing options...i believe they start from £240 and go up depending what you choose. not sure if you caught this but the deposit amount changed as well to £1000.

There are a few BUT only ever built for John G Perry, like the original W1111 above. John only played scale basses having played Gibson EBs pretty much exclusively prior to the Wal. So, the first JG bass was JP1111 (as opposed to JG1111) and was a shorty. When I interviewed John for my blog he came around for the afternoon and brought along this Mk 1 Custom that Wal had made for him. Also a short scale...Also from the blog...
