It's not my bass, but I thought that it would be interesting for us to watch its' progress and see how much it sells for :). Who knows, maybe one of you guys will buy it ;)!

As Wal officiandos will know, this combination of mahogany core, walnut facings and an ebony fretboard, make for the architypal "Wal fretless" tone :bassist:.

Nice bass for some lucky person! :smug:

I think it's cool to hear comments like Mark's; even if I love my Wal, which hopefully will show up, it's kind of like, not EVERYONE thinks the Fender Jazz is the ultimate bass. It certainly seems that most "custom" instruments have things about them which, maybe an "old" Fender would do better ?

It reminds me of what people have said about Neumann microphones : it's the vocal sound people have gotten USED to hearing over many years, much like a P bass, and recording engineers can easily make them sound great because they are so used to them, etc. I haven't owned lots of super high end basses, but I've had MANY favorable comments from much better players than myself, who HAVE owned them ALL, regarding my Wal fretless, so that is pretty cool. Of course, they all want it !

Hopefully, we won't have to wait a year for the new/old guy (Paul) to get up and running and hopefully Pete will still be involved a couple of days a week.

OK, that's NOT mine...

THIS should be mine. Claro Walnut top "Mach 3 neck joint (5 bolts, better access to upper "fret" regions" slanted tuners, (not shown) Play it exclusively for original bands, and as many cover tunes as I can get away with. Tons of headroom, gooey, warm, thick, and clear tone, even with older strings. Would love a fretted version !

thanks - i like it too :-) But it's just 4 strings ..

Actually, this bass has a funny story. I went to the store in Hamburg with some money to spend - wanted to buy THE bass. After having played cheapos and my Precision for years it should be the one bass.

In the shop, i was talking to a nice guy, he showed this and that to me, we were arguing about neck shapes and weight, bridge positioning - you get the idea.

Then he was asking if i'd rather try to test one of his basses ....? That guy was Ashley Pangborn (if some of you remember) - and he presented some beauties (amongst them one of these fretless with a metalplate at the neck of the neck - for the slap-brilliance :-). But all with a graphite neck - which i didn't like at that time.

Then he ended up with "Then i should call a friend in England - he will realise this instrument". So, my Wal was actually built by Wal using necksize, bridgeposition etc. thoroughly checked one to one with another famous bass luthier. This is the reason for the - a bit different - body shape.

man, I wish Ashley would get back to the UK and start making basses again...I've had GAS for a Warlord ever since I saw Mark King playing a Pangborn in the video for "The Sun Goes Down"!

I have to get a full-family picture as these two aren't the greatest...but you definitely get the idea.

I have been playing Wals almost exclusively since '91 (got my Mark II Fretted in '91 and Mark II Fretless in '92). They are very comfortable for me. I did acquire the Mark IIIs in the last couple of years as the Mark IIs are quite heavy and I was having some shoulder/back issues during long gigs. The Mark IIIs I can play all night long. They have the sound, the feel, with no weight issues. All four were crafted very well. I haven't found another bass that has the depth and presence of a Wal...I am never lost in the band, always in the band and can definitely cut-through when I want to.

Hey guys, I guess you can count me in:hyper:
I just pickued up this baby. It's a Mach 1 4-string padauk fretless. I got it for an incredibly low price but that is because it has some cosmetic issues. The bass was in a fire years ago and consequently suffered some damage to the back. Also, for some reason the WAL logo is missing from the headstock. I doubt it's a copy so Lord knows what happened to that logo. Still she's a beaut, plus I don't have to worry about pulling her out of the house to play at gigs :bassist: Despite the burn, is she still worth something?

Here are some pics the seller had taken. I'll take some better ones once she gets here...I'm so stoked!!!:D
